Why self-employed Texans choose the Marketplace

Income-based savings

Premium tax credits can lower your monthly premium; cost-sharing reductions on Silver plans can reduce deductibles and copays if eligible.

Comprehensive benefits

ACA plans include essential health benefits—$0 preventive, hospital and emergency care, prescription drugs, mental health, and pediatric dental/vision (plan rules apply).

HSA-friendly choices

Select an HSA-eligible HDHP to pair tax-advantaged savings with lower premiums and long-term flexibility for qualified medical expenses.

Statewide access

We compare options across metros like Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso to match networks, Rx tiers, and total cost to your needs.

Tax basics for the self-employed (TX)

  • Self-employed health insurance deduction: Premiums for you, your spouse, and dependents may be deductible above-the-line if you have net profit and no employer coverage available.
  • Premium tax credits: Marketplace plans may qualify for advance credits to lower monthly costs; estimate annual income and reconcile at tax time.
  • HSA contributions: With an HSA-qualified HDHP, contributions are tax-deductible, grow tax-deferred, and can be withdrawn tax-free for qualified expenses.
  • Have employees? Consider ICHRA or QSEHRA to reimburse individual coverage pre-tax (with proper plan setup and notices).

Coordinate plan selection with your CPA to optimize deductions and avoid surprises.

Networks & doctor access

Most Texas individual plans use HMO or EPO networks (in-network only except emergencies). Some PPOs exist at higher premiums. We’ll verify your PCPs, specialists, hospitals, and prescription formularies before you enroll.

  • Telehealth and behavioral health are commonly included benefits.
  • HMO plans may require referrals; EPOs typically don’t.
  • If you travel for work, ask about out-of-area solutions and multi-state access.

Budget tips & year-round strategy

  • Estimate income conservatively and update mid-year to keep subsidies accurate.
  • Fund HSAs regularly to offset deductibles with tax-advantaged dollars.
  • Pair an HDHP with supplemental coverage for a stronger financial backstop.
  • Re-shop at renewal—premiums, networks, and formularies change annually.
  • Keep receipts for premiums, HSA deposits, and eligible medical expenses.

Self-employed health insurance — FAQs

When can I enroll?

Open Enrollment: November 1, 2025 – January 15, 2026. Enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1; enrollments from December 16 – January 15 generally start February 1. You may also qualify year-round for a Special Enrollment Period after certain life events. Short-term plans are available year-round.

Does Texas use HealthCare.gov?

Yes. Texas uses the federally facilitated Marketplace for individual and family plans.

How do subsidies work if my income fluctuates?

Apply with your best annual estimate, update if income changes, and reconcile credits on your tax return.

Are short-term plans “real insurance”?

They are medical insurance but not ACA-compliant. For policies sold on/after Sept 1, 2024, federal rules limit initial terms to ~3 months and total duration (including renewals/extensions) to ~4 months. We use STM for temporary gaps only.

Can I use an HSA with any plan?

No. You need an HSA-qualified HDHP. We’ll confirm eligibility before you open or fund an HSA.

What if my doctors aren’t in network?

We’ll look for plans that include your providers or compare alternatives factoring total cost and access.
