Illustration of a signed surety bond with a seal and shield, titled Columbus Contractor Bond

The City of Columbus requires a $25,000 surety bond, on the city’s bond form, for several contractor licenses issued by Building and Zoning Services, including general contractors. Contractors also need liability insurance of at least $300,000 per person and $500,000 per occurrence. Published bond prices are about $250 a year.

This guide covers which Columbus licenses need the bond, the insurance requirement, and costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency, and a licensed agent can help with both the bond and the insurance.

Columbus bond requirement

The City of Columbus contractor application states that Section 4114 of the Columbus Building Code requires a bond in the amount of $25,000, and that the city’s bond form must be used. SuretyBonds.com reports that the same $25,000 bond applies to general, sewer and water, fire protection, and OCILB (for example, HVAC) contractors.

Insurance requirement

Columbus also requires a certificate of liability insurance with limits of at least $300,000 for damages to a single person and $500,000 for one occurrence, naming the City of Columbus, Building and Zoning Services, as certificate holder (City of Columbus contractor application). See our general liability insurance guide.

How much the Columbus bond costs

SuretyBonds.com lists the $25,000 Columbus contractor bond at about $250 a year. City license and registration fees are separate and listed in the city’s development fee schedule.

What the bond protects

The bond protects the city and the public if the contractor violates city building requirements. If the surety pays a claim, the contractor must repay it. See licensed, bonded, and insured.
