Ohio Electrical Contractor Insurance: OCILB License, $500,000 Liability, and BWC

Illustration of an electrical panel, conduit, and outlets for ohio electrical contractor insurance

Ohio’s Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) licenses electrical contractors for commercial construction, and licensees must carry at least $500,000 of contractor liability that includes completed operations. Residential work is regulated locally. Ohio is a monopolistic state, so employers buy workers’ comp from the Ohio BWC.

This guide covers Ohio electrical licensing, insurance minimums, BWC workers’ comp, coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Ohio, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your electrical business.

Ohio electrical contractor license

  • Active OCILB electrical contractors must carry at least $500,000 of contractor liability, including completed operations, in the licensee’s or assigned company’s name (Contractor License Requirements (Ohio electrician guide)).
  • The standard path is five years as a tradesperson, plus the electrical trade exam and the business and law exam, each with a 70% passing score.
  • The state license does not cover residential buildings, which local governments regulate, and it does not replace local permits.

Some cities also require a contractor bond; see our Columbus contractor license bond guide.

Ohio BWC workers’ compensation

Ohio employers with one or more employees must buy workers’ compensation from the Ohio BWC. The state fund does not include employer’s liability, so many contractors add stop-gap coverage to their general liability policy (Insureon (monopolistic states)).

Coverage most Ohio electricians carry

  • General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a wiring fault that starts a fire in a customer’s home.
  • Business owner’s policy: general liability bundled with property coverage for your shop, wire, and stock.
  • Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if an employee is hurt, including shocks and falls.
  • Commercial auto: service vans and bucket trucks that carry crews and equipment.
  • Tools and equipment (inland marine): meters, benders, lifts, and power tools on job sites or in transit.
  • Commercial umbrella: extra limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
