Bond and insurance requirements
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Surety bond | $5,000 corporate surety bond payable to the Construction Industries Board |
| Bond form | In the license holder’s name; continuous, with 30 days’ cancellation notice |
| General liability | At least $50,000, with the CIB as certificate holder |
| Lapse | A lapse in insurance makes the license inactive |
Who the bond protects
The bond is payable to the Board, and the contractor must indemnify municipalities and the State against liability from the contractor’s negligence. Aggrieved persons may sue on the bond as if named as obligees (Okla. Admin. Code 158:50-5-3).
Roofers and general contractors
Roofing contractors register with the CIB and must carry $500,000 of liability coverage for residential work, or $1,000,000 with a commercial endorsement, but no state bond is required (CIB roofing requirements). Oklahoma has no statewide general contractor license; check with your city.
How much an Oklahoma contractor bond costs
Published prices for the $5,000 bond start around $50 a year (SuretyBonds.com). See our general liability insurance guide for the coverage the license also requires.
