Bond or trust fund
| $20,000 surety bond | Trust fund enrollment | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Annual bond premium | $200 enrollment fee |
| Renewal | Bond must not expire before the license period ends | Usually no new payment if the fund stays above $2 million |
| Proof for DCWP | Bond copy naming DCWP and a paid-in-full receipt | Enrollment through the license application |
How the trust fund protects consumers
The DCWP trust fund lets eligible consumers recover up to $40,000 through the standard process, or up to $20,000 through the claim process after mediation, when they hired a licensed contractor who paid into the fund. A bond protects consumers in a similar way: the surety pays valid claims up to $20,000, and the contractor must repay the surety (SuretyBonds.com).

How much the $20,000 bond costs
SuretyBonds.com lists the NYC $20,000 home improvement contractor bond starting at $100 a year. Because licenses expire February 28 of odd-numbered years, the premium you pay can depend on when you buy.
Other coverage for contractors
The bond or trust fund protects consumers, not your business. Most home improvement contractors also carry general liability insurance and, with employees, workers’ compensation. See licensed, bonded, and insured.
