Iowa Contractor Bond guide illustration

Iowa requires construction contractors who earn more than $2,000 a year to register with the Division of Labor. Contractors whose principal place of business is outside Iowa must also file a $25,000 surety bond before starting work.

This guide covers registration, the out-of-state bond, fees, and cost. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency, and a licensed agent can help with your bond and contractor insurance.

The out-of-state contractor bond

Contractors whose principal place of business is outside Iowa must file a $25,000 bond with the Division of Labor (Iowa Division of Labor). A branch office in Iowa does not make a contractor in-state, and older guidance ties the bond to Iowa jobs of $5,000 or more (City of Des Moines contractor law summary). File the bond before starting work in Iowa.

How much an Iowa contractor bond costs

Premiums are a small percentage of the $25,000 bond and depend on credit. See our surety bond cost calculator and general liability insurance guide.
