Florida Notary Bond: $7,500 Requirement, Cost, and How to Apply

Illustration of a signed surety bond with a seal and shield, titled Florida Notary Bond

Florida requires every notary public to obtain a $7,500 surety bond for a four-year commission. First-time applicants must also complete a three-hour notary education course. Applications are typically filed with the Department of State through a bonding agency, with a $39 state filing fee; bond-and-fee packages start around $69.

This guide covers the bond, eligibility, education, fees, and how to apply. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency, and a licensed agent can help with your bond.

Florida notary bond requirement

The Florida Department of State notary application requires a $7,500 bond conditioned on the notary faithfully performing the duties of office for a four-year term. The bond must be signed by a surety company and a Florida-licensed agent and submitted to the Department of State after the surety executes it.

Eligibility and education

  • At least 18 years old.
  • A legal resident of Florida.
  • Not a convicted felon, unless civil rights have been restored.
  • First-time applicants must complete a three-hour notary education course within one year before applying.

How to apply

  1. Complete the three-hour course if you have never been a Florida notary.
  2. Choose a bonding agency. The Department of State receives applications from bonding agencies and issues commissions.
  3. Submit your application and pay the fees, including the $39 state filing fee.
  4. Receive your commission through the bonding agency, then order your notary stamp.

How much a Florida notary bond costs

The National Notary Association lists a Florida notary bond package at $69, made up of a $30 bond and the $39 state filing fee, or $102 with the required notary stamp. Prices vary by provider, and errors and omissions insurance is extra.

Who the bond protects

The bond protects the public, not the notary. If the surety pays a claim, the notary must repay it. Optional E&O insurance helps cover the notary’s own costs for claims over honest mistakes.
