Illinois notary bond requirement
Under 5 ILCS 312/2-105, an Illinois notary must obtain a bond in the sum of $5,000 with a term of four years, beginning on the date of appointment. The bond accompanies the application, and the bonding company submits bond verification to the Secretary of State. Notaries performing remote notarization for remotely located signers need a $30,000 bond (National Notary Association).
How to become an Illinois notary
- Complete a three-hour notary training course and keep proof of completion.
- Pass the state exam, a 50-question test requiring a score of at least 85%.
- Buy your $5,000 notary bond.
- Apply online through the Secretary of State; the application fee is $15, or $40 with electronic notary.

Who the bond protects
The notary bond protects the public, not the notary. If the surety pays a claim, the notary must repay it. Optional errors and omissions insurance helps cover the notary’s own costs for claims over honest mistakes.
How much an Illinois notary bond costs
Notary bonds are usually sold at a low flat price without a credit check, often bundled with a stamp or E&O coverage. Compare packages before you buy, and see our surety bond cost guide.
