Alabama Notary Bond: $50,000 Requirement and How to Apply

Alabama Notary Bond guide illustration

Alabama notaries must post a $50,000 surety bond, up from the former $25,000. Notaries are appointed by their county probate judge for a four-year term and must complete state training. Published bond prices start around $100 for the full term.

This guide covers the bond, the application, training, fees, and cost. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency, and a licensed agent can help with your bond.

The $50,000 bond

Alabama raised the notary bond from $25,000 to $50,000 (Montgomery County Probate Court). You get the bond after the probate judge sends your appointment letter, then record it with the probate court (National Notary Association).

How to apply

  1. Apply to your county probate judge and pay the application fee.
  2. Complete the required state training; Montgomery County requires it within 30 days of applying.
  3. Buy your $50,000 bond once you receive the appointment letter.
  4. Record the bond with the probate court and present your training certificate.

Fees and deadlines vary by county. Montgomery County, for example, charges a $10 application fee and a $59 filing fee, and requires recording within 40 days of the appointment letter (Montgomery County Probate Court).
