Kansas Surety Bonds: Requirements and Costs by Bond Type
Kansas requires surety bonds for new and used vehicle dealers, notaries, and contractors on public works over $100,000. Dealers need a $50,000 bond, notaries need $12,000, and public works bonds must equal the full contract price. This guide lists the most common Kansas bonds and what they cost.

Kansas contractors
Kansas has no statewide general contractor license or license bond; many cities and counties license contractors and may require their own bonds. Roofing contractors must register with the Attorney General and carry at least $500,000 of liability insurance, and the registration act lets the Attorney General require surety bonds by rule (Kansas Roofing Registration Act). See our general liability insurance guide.
Federal bonds Kansas businesses often need
- Freight broker bond (BMC-84): $75,000, filed with FMCSA.
- ERISA bond: at least 10% of plan funds handled.
- Bid bonds and Miller Act bonds on federal construction.
What Kansas bonds cost
Notary bonds start around $50 for four years, and the $50,000 dealer bond starts around $350 a year. Contract bonds are priced based on credit and finances. See our surety bond cost guide or the surety bond cost calculator.
