Kansas Electrical Contractor Insurance: Local Licensing and Coverage

Illustration of an electrical panel, conduit, and outlets for kansas electrical contractor insurance

Kansas does not issue a statewide electrician or electrical contractor license, so the city or county with jurisdiction sets the rules. Johnson County, for example, issues a Class DE license with a qualifying individual who passed a standard master electrician exam, and requires a general liability certificate. Workers’ comp generally applies with more than $20,000 of payroll.

This guide covers Kansas electrical licensing, local insurance rules, workers’ comp, coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Kansas, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your electrical business.

Kansas electrical licensing

  • Kansas has no statewide electrician or electrical contractor credential, so the city or county with jurisdiction decides what applies (Contractor License Requirements (Kansas electrician guide)).
  • Johnson County’s Class DE license requires a qualifying individual with a 75% or higher score on an approved master electrician exam, a $100 application fee, and a $225 yearly license fee.
  • Johnson County also requires a general liability certificate naming its office, and workers’ comp or a notarized waiver.

Kansas workers’ compensation

Kansas generally requires workers’ compensation for nonagricultural employers with more than $20,000 in gross annual payroll, with some exceptions (Contractor License Requirements (Kansas contractor guide)).

Coverage most Kansas electricians carry

  • General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a wiring fault that starts a fire in a customer’s home.
  • Business owner’s policy: general liability bundled with property coverage for your shop, wire, and stock.
  • Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if an employee is hurt, including shocks and falls.
  • Commercial auto: service vans and bucket trucks that carry crews and equipment.
  • Tools and equipment (inland marine): meters, benders, lifts, and power tools on job sites or in transit.
  • Commercial umbrella: extra limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
