Tesla Model 3 Car Insurance: Costs, Coverage, and Savings

Tesla Model 3 car insurance often costs more than insurance for a gas sedan with a similar price, mainly because repairs can be expensive and slow: body work may require Tesla-approved shops, parts can take time to arrive, and the battery pack is costly if damaged. Shopping several insurers matters more than usual.

This guide explains why Model 3 repairs affect premiums, how battery and driver-assistance questions are handled, where to buy coverage, and how to save. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many drivers.

What drives the cost of insuring a Tesla Model 3

Insurers price a Tesla Model 3 from two sets of facts: the vehicle itself and the people who drive it. For the Model 3, the vehicle-related factors that matter most are:

  • Repair cost and time. Body repairs, structural parts, and sensor calibration can be expensive, and parts delays can extend rental needs
  • Battery pack. Damage to the high-voltage battery from a crash or debris can be costly, sometimes leading to a total loss
  • Performance. Quick acceleration, especially on Performance versions, can affect pricing with some insurers
  • Value. Price changes on new Teslas affect used values, which affects what physical damage coverage would pay

Driver facts usually carry more weight than the vehicle: the ages and records of everyone in the household, past claims, the ZIP code where the Model 3 is parked, annual mileage, a credit-based insurance score where state law allows it, and the limits and deductibles you choose. For context, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported an average auto insurance expenditure of $1,281.60 nationwide in 2023. Individual premiums land far above and below that figure, so treat it as background rather than a benchmark for your own quote.

Because every insurer weighs these facts differently, two companies can quote the same Model 3 and the same driver hundreds of dollars apart. Our car insurance calculator shows how coverage choices move a premium, and our guide to car insurance quotes explains how to keep comparisons fair.

Why Model 3 repairs affect premiums

Insurers price collision and comprehensive coverage on what claims actually cost. For the Model 3, several factors push those costs up:

  • Approved shops. Tesla maintains a network of approved collision centers. Structural repairs often need one, and there may be fewer near you than for mainstream brands.
  • Parts availability. Waiting for parts can stretch a repair over weeks, raising rental costs.
  • Battery protection. Damage near the underbody battery pack requires careful inspection and can lead to replacement or a total loss.
  • Cameras and sensors. Cameras around the car support Autopilot and must work correctly after repairs.

Choose rental reimbursement with enough days to cover a long repair, and ask your insurer how it handles Tesla repairs in your area.

Autopilot, Full Self-Driving, and responsibility

Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) assist with steering, braking, and speed, but Tesla states that they require active driver supervision. From an insurance standpoint, you remain the driver. If a crash happens while a feature is engaged, your liability, collision, and medical coverages respond as they would in any other crash.

Some insurers ask about these features or price them, and some do not. A subscription or purchase of Full Self-Driving is separate from insurance. Keep in mind that the Model 3's cameras can record events, which may help document what happened after a crash.

Tesla Insurance and other insurers

Tesla sells its own auto insurance in some states, and in some of them it uses real-time driving data from the car to set or adjust premiums. Most major insurers also write the Model 3. Before choosing:

  • Compare Tesla's quote with several other insurers using identical limits and deductibles.
  • Ask how each insurer handles repairs, approved shops, and rental cars.
  • Check whether bundling your home or renters policy elsewhere saves more overall.
  • Understand how driving data affects your premium under any telematics-based program.

Coverage to consider for a Tesla Model 3

  • Liability above the state minimum, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at matching limits. See UM and UIM coverage.
  • Collision and comprehensive. Damage to the high-voltage battery from a crash, flood, fire, or road debris is generally handled like other physical damage, subject to your deductible. Gradual loss of battery capacity is wear and is not an insurance claim.
  • Gap coverage on a financed or leased Model 3, especially if you made a small down payment.
  • Rental reimbursement with enough room for a repair that takes weeks while parts arrive or a certified shop schedules the work.
  • Roadside assistance that includes flatbed towing, which many electric vehicles require.
  • Home charging equipment. A wall charger installed at your home is generally treated as part of the home, not the car. Ask your homeowners insurer.

Repairs, parts, and claims on a Model 3

Repair costs drive the collision and comprehensive part of your premium, and they decide how smooth a claim feels. A few points apply to almost every modern Model 3:

  • Sensor calibration. Cameras and radar used by driver-assistance features often sit behind the windshield, in the grille, or in the bumpers. After a windshield replacement or a minor bumper repair, those systems may need calibration, which adds cost. Ask whether your glass coverage includes it.
  • Parts. Policies differ on whether repairs use new factory parts, aftermarket parts, or recycled parts. Read the parts language in your policy, and ask about an OEM parts endorsement if it matters to you.
  • Choice of shop. In most states you can choose your repair shop. An insurer's preferred shop may offer a repair guarantee, but you are generally not required to use it.
  • Supplements. Hidden damage is often found after a bumper or panel comes off. Shops send a supplement to the insurer, which can extend the repair time and the rental you need.

If you are unsure whether to file a small claim, compare the repair estimate with your deductible and ask your agent how a claim might affect renewal. See comprehensive vs. collision coverage for which coverage pays for which kind of damage.

Financed, leased, or paid off: matching coverage to how you own it

Financed or leased

Lenders and leasing companies require collision and comprehensive, often with a maximum deductible such as $500 or $1,000, and they must be listed on the policy as loss payee or additional insured. Leases often require higher liability limits as well. Check the contract before you shop so every quote meets it.

Gap and new car replacement

A new Model 3 can be worth less than the loan balance for the first few years. Gap coverage pays the difference after a total loss, minus your deductible. Some insurers also offer new car replacement, which pays to replace a recent-model car with a new one of the same make and model. Compare the insurer's price with the gap product offered at the dealership.

Paid off

Once the loan is paid off, you choose the coverage. Many owners keep collision and comprehensive on a Model 3 of this age and value, but raise the deductible to lower the premium. Revisit the decision every year or two as the vehicle ages.

Ways to save on Tesla Model 3 insurance

  1. Compare several insurers, since some price electric vehicles more favorably than others.
  2. Ask about discounts for safety features, anti-theft systems, paid-in-full, paperless, and autopay.
  3. Bundle with home or renters insurance and insure household vehicles together.
  4. Choose deductibles you could pay without strain.
  5. Consider telematics if you drive carefully.
  6. Ask whether any insurer offers a discount for a green or alternative-fuel vehicle in your state.

Avoid saving money by dropping liability limits to the minimum or leaving off household drivers. Both can leave you exposed after a serious crash, and an undisclosed driver can complicate a claim. See our list of car insurance discounts for more ideas.

What you need for a Model 3 insurance quote

These details help insurers rate the right Model 3 and match your coverage.

  1. VIN, model year, and trim. This tells the insurer the exact Model 3, including engine, drivetrain, and equipment.
  2. Every household driver. Names, dates of birth, license numbers, and driving history for anyone who lives with you and drives.
  3. Current declarations page. So new quotes match your limits, deductibles, and optional coverages.
  4. How you use the vehicle. Commuting distance, annual mileage, and any business, delivery, or rideshare use.
  5. Loan or lease details. The lienholder's name and any coverage or deductible requirements in the contract.

Tesla Model 3 insurance FAQs

Why is Tesla Model 3 insurance so expensive?

Repairs can be costly and slow, with approved shops, parts delays, and battery inspections. Driver and location factors still matter most.

Is Tesla Insurance cheaper?

Sometimes, for some drivers in states where it is sold. Compare it with several insurers using identical coverage.

Does Autopilot lower my insurance?

Not usually. Some insurers may price it, but you remain responsible for the car and liability coverage applies as usual.

Does the Performance version cost more to insure?

Often, because of its higher price and quicker acceleration.

Is the Model 3 expensive to insure?

Electric vehicles can cost more to repair, which can raise collision and comprehensive premiums. Your drivers, location, and coverage still matter most.

Does insurance cover the battery?

Sudden damage from a covered crash, flood, fire, or debris is generally covered under collision or comprehensive. Gradual capacity loss is not.

Is my home charger covered by auto insurance?

Usually not. A charger installed at your home is generally treated as part of the home under your homeowners policy.

Do I need flatbed towing?

Many electric vehicles should be towed on a flatbed. Check that your roadside coverage allows it.
