Tesla Model Y Car Insurance: Costs and Coverage Options
Tesla Model Y car insurance tends to cost more than insurance for a comparable gas compact SUV, mainly because the Model Y costs more to buy and to repair after a crash. Two factors work in its favor: it has one of the lowest theft claim rates of any vehicle, and the 2027 Model Y earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest award.
Below we explain how insurers weigh those factors, how the different Model Y trims compare, what to know about Tesla's own insurance program, and which coverages matter most for an electric vehicle. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many Tesla owners.

Why Model Y insurance can cost more
Collision and comprehensive premiums track what insurers expect to pay when a vehicle is damaged. For the Model Y, several features push that number up:
- Purchase price. Even the Standard trim costs more than many gas compact SUVs, and a higher value means a larger payout after a total loss.
- Construction. Tesla uses large single-piece aluminum castings in parts of the body. Damage to a casting can be more involved to repair than damage to a conventional stamped-steel structure.
- Sensors and cameras. Tesla's driver-assistance features rely on multiple cameras that may need replacement or calibration after a collision.
- Repair network. Tesla certifies a network of collision centers. Depending on where you live, approved shops may be limited, which can lengthen repairs and increase rental costs.
- High-voltage battery. Damage near the battery pack can require specialized inspection and, in some cases, makes a total loss more likely.
None of these factors affects liability coverage as much, because liability pays for damage you cause to others. A careful driver with a clean record can still find competitive overall pricing.
Low theft risk and strong safety ratings
The Model Y's theft record is a genuine advantage. In the Highway Loss Data Institute's study of 2022 to 2024 models, the all-wheel-drive Model Y had a relative whole-vehicle theft claim frequency of 2, where 100 is average. Constant connectivity, GPS tracking, and phone-key technology make Teslas difficult to steal and easy to locate. That helps keep the theft portion of comprehensive coverage low, although comprehensive still covers other losses such as glass, hail, falling objects, and vandalism.
The 2027 Model Y also earned a 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, its highest rating. Strong crash protection can help limit injury claims, which affects bodily injury and medical coverage costs. Ratings apply to specific model years, so check the rating for your vehicle.
Model Y trims and insurance considerations
The trim you choose affects both the vehicle's value and its performance, and insurers consider both. The table below summarizes the 2026 lineup.
| Trim | Drivetrain and performance | Insurance considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Rear- or all-wheel drive; the lowest-priced Model Y | Lowest replacement value in the lineup |
| Premium (formerly Long Range) | Rear- or all-wheel drive; longest range | Higher value than Standard, which can raise collision and comprehensive costs |
| Performance | All-wheel drive; quickest acceleration, about 3.3 seconds to 60 mph by Tesla's estimate; larger wheels | Highest value and performance; usually the most expensive Model Y to insure |
Trim names and specifications reflect Tesla's 2026 lineup as reported by Edmunds. Earlier model years used different names.
If you are choosing between the Premium and Performance trims, it is worth getting quotes on both before you order, because the price gap varies by insurer.
Tesla Insurance compared with other insurers
Tesla sells its own auto insurance in a limited number of states. In some states, Tesla Insurance uses driving data from the vehicle to set or adjust premiums. That can benefit drivers with smooth, attentive habits and penalize hard braking or aggressive driving.
Other major insurers also cover Teslas, and some offer their own telematics programs through a phone app. Points to compare:
- Price for your profile. Neither Tesla Insurance nor any other company is always cheapest. Compare matching coverage.
- Claims and repairs. Ask how each insurer handles repairs at Tesla-approved collision centers and how long rental coverage lasts if parts are delayed.
- Bundling. If you insure a home or other vehicles, a traditional insurer may offer multi-policy discounts that change the comparison.
- Data use. Understand what driving data is collected and how it affects your rate at renewal. See our overview of usage-based insurance.
Coverage to consider for a Model Y
Because repairs can be expensive and slow, these coverages deserve extra attention:
- Collision and comprehensive on any Model Y you could not afford to replace. Leases and loans require them.
- Rental reimbursement with daily and total limits high enough to cover a long repair.
- Gap coverage if you financed or leased with little down, since a new EV can lose value quickly in the first years.
- New car replacement or better car replacement, offered by some insurers for newer vehicles, which can pay more than actual cash value after a total loss.
- Glass coverage, given the Model Y's large glass roof and windshield-mounted cameras.
- Higher liability limits. Quick acceleration does not change your legal responsibility, but strong limits protect your savings. Pair them with uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
Home charging equipment installed on your property is generally covered by homeowners insurance as part of the home. Ask your auto insurer whether a portable charging cable kept in the car is covered.
Insuring a used Model Y
The Model Y has been on sale since the 2020 model year, so used ones are widely available. A used Model Y usually costs less to insure for collision and comprehensive than a new one, simply because it is worth less. A few points are specific to buying used:
- Trim names changed. Earlier model years used names such as Long Range and Standard Range. Quote using the VIN rather than the trim name so the insurer rates the right configuration.
- Software features. Some Teslas have paid software features, such as Full Self-Driving capability, tied to the car. If the car is totaled, ask how the insurer values those features, because valuation practices vary.
- Prior damage. Check the vehicle history report and inspect for previous repairs, especially near the battery and the rear casting.
- Battery warranty. Tesla's battery and drive unit warranty runs for a set time and mileage. Warranty coverage is separate from insurance, which pays for sudden accidental damage rather than wear or defects.

What you need for a Model Y insurance quote
Tesla details matter for an accurate quote, so have these ready.
- VIN and trim. The VIN confirms the model year, trim, and drivetrain, which affect the vehicle's value.
- Purchase or lease paperwork. Lender or lessor name, loan balance, and any required limits or maximum deductible.
- Drivers and history. Dates of birth, license numbers, and accidents or tickets for everyone who will drive the car.
- Current coverage. Your declarations page, so new quotes match or improve on your current limits.
- Garaging and charging. Where the car is parked overnight, and whether you charge at home.
Tesla Model Y insurance FAQs
Why is Tesla Model Y insurance expensive?
Mainly because of repair costs. The Model Y has a higher price than many gas SUVs, aluminum castings, multiple cameras, and a specialized repair network. Its low theft rate and strong safety rating help offset some of that.
Is the Model Y Performance more expensive to insure?
Usually, because it has the highest value and quickest acceleration in the lineup. Compare quotes on the exact trim before ordering.
Is Tesla Insurance cheaper than other insurers?
Sometimes, but not always. It is available only in some states, and pricing may reflect your driving data. Compare it with other companies using the same coverage.
Does the Model Y get a discount for safety features?
Some insurers offer discounts for features like automatic emergency braking, and others build safety performance into their base rates. The effect varies by company.
Is the Model Y likely to be stolen?
Theft risk is very low. HLDI data shows the all-wheel-drive Model Y among the least-stolen vehicles for the 2022 to 2024 model years.
Does my policy cover my home charger?
A charger installed at your home is usually treated as part of the home under a homeowners policy. Check with both your home and auto insurers about portable cables.
Does a Model Y cost more to insure than a Model 3?
It often costs a little more because the Model Y usually has a higher price, but the gap varies by insurer, trim, and driver. Compare quotes on both if you are deciding between them.
