Nebraska Surety Bonds: Requirements and Costs by Bond Type
Nebraska requires surety bonds for vehicle dealers, notaries, and contractors on public works. Dealers need a $50,000 bond, notaries need $15,000, and public works payment bonds must equal the full contract price on state jobs over $15,000 and local jobs over $10,000. This guide lists the most common Nebraska bonds and what they cost.
Each bond links to a detailed guide with official sources. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Nebraska, and a licensed agent can help you find and file the bond you need.

Nebraska contractors
Nebraska contractors register with the Department of Labor before starting construction work, but the state does not require a contractor license bond. Those earning under $5,000 a year or working on their own property are exempt (Koley Jessen). Some cities, such as Lincoln, require their own contractor bonds. See our general liability insurance guide.
Federal bonds Nebraska businesses often need
- Freight broker bond (BMC-84): $75,000, filed with FMCSA.
- ERISA bond: at least 10% of plan funds handled.
- Bid bonds and Miller Act bonds on federal construction.
What Nebraska bonds cost
