Nebraska Roofing Contractor Insurance: Registration, Workers’ Comp, and City Rules
Nebraska does not issue a state roofing license. Roofers must register with the Nebraska Department of Labor before doing construction work, renew each year, and file proof of workers’ compensation, self-insurance approval, or a signed statement that coverage is not required. Some cities set their own insurance minimums.
This guide covers Nebraska contractor registration, workers’ comp, city requirements, coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Nebraska, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your roofing business.

Nebraska contractor registration
- Roofers register with the Nebraska Department of Labor before doing construction work, and renew each year for $40 (Contractor License Requirements (Nebraska roofing guide)).
- The filing includes a workers’ compensation certificate, self-insurance approval, or a signed statement that coverage is not required.
- State registration sets no liability minimum, but cities may. For example, Fremont requires at least $250,000 of liability naming the city as additional insured (Contractor License Requirements (Nebraska roofing guide)).
- Nebraska law bars residential contractors from advertising or promising to rebate an insurance deductible (Contractor License Requirements (Nebraska roofing guide)).
Coverage most Nebraska roofers carry
- General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a dropped bundle that damages a car or a leak that ruins a homeowner’s ceiling.
- Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if a crew member is hurt, including falls.
- Commercial auto: trucks and trailers used to haul crews, materials, and debris.
- Tools and equipment (inland marine): ladders, nail guns, and compressors on job sites or in transit.
- Commercial umbrella: extra liability limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
