Nissan Altima Car Insurance: Costs, Coverage, and Savings
Nissan Altima car insurance is generally priced like other midsize sedans, but the Altima is often driven by younger and newer drivers, whose premiums are higher on any car. The Altima also appeared on the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the ten most stolen vehicles of 2025.
This guide covers what drives Altima insurance costs, how trims compare, theft precautions, coverage for younger drivers, and ways to save. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many drivers.

What drives the cost of insuring a Nissan Altima
Insurers price a Nissan Altima from two sets of facts: the vehicle itself and the people who drive it. For the Altima, the vehicle-related factors that matter most are:
- Driver profile. Insurers often see younger drivers in Altimas, and driver age affects price more than the car
- Theft exposure. The Altima's place on the most-stolen list can raise comprehensive costs in some areas
- Trim. SR and Platinum trims add value, larger wheels, and more equipment
- Sensors. Driver-assistance sensors raise repair costs
Driver facts usually carry more weight than the vehicle: the ages and records of everyone in the household, past claims, the ZIP code where the Altima is parked, annual mileage, a credit-based insurance score where state law allows it, and the limits and deductibles you choose. For context, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported an average auto insurance expenditure of $1,281.60 nationwide in 2023. Individual premiums land far above and below that figure, so treat it as background rather than a benchmark for your own quote.
Because every insurer weighs these facts differently, two companies can quote the same Altima and the same driver hundreds of dollars apart. Our car insurance calculator shows how coverage choices move a premium, and our guide to car insurance quotes explains how to keep comparisons fair.
Altima trims and insurance
| Trim group | Examples | Insurance considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Core trims | S, SV | Lowest value; usually the least expensive Altima to insure |
| Sport trims | SR | Sportier equipment and larger wheels; some years offered a turbo engine |
| Top trims | SL, Platinum | More equipment and technology |
| All-wheel drive | Available on many trims | Slightly higher value; traction benefits in bad weather |
Trim names and engines vary by model year. Insurers rate the exact VIN.
Earlier Altimas, including the popular fifth generation sold from 2013 to 2018, are common used cars. Insurers rate each model year separately.
Theft risk and prevention
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the most stolen vehicles of 2025, as reported by AAA Club Alliance in August 2026, the Nissan Altima ranked tenth nationally with 8,445 thefts. Midsize sedans are stolen for resale and parts.
- Keep comprehensive coverage, which pays for theft and vandalism.
- Park in a garage or well-lit area, and never leave the key fob inside.
- Use a steering wheel lock or tracking device; some insurers offer anti-theft discounts.
- Do not leave valuables visible, which invites break-ins.
Personal items stolen from the car are generally covered under homeowners or renters insurance, not auto insurance.
Young drivers and the Altima
Because many Altimas are driven by younger drivers, it is worth knowing how to manage the cost:
- Stay on a parent's policy when possible; it is usually less expensive.
- Ask for good student, driver training, and distant student discounts.
- Consider telematics programs that reward careful driving.
- Choose an S or SV trim rather than an SR with a larger engine or wheels.
- Keep a clean record; tickets and accidents raise premiums for years.

Coverage to consider for a Nissan Altima
- Liability above the state minimum. Minimum limits are a legal floor and can be exhausted quickly by one serious injury claim. Many drivers choose 100/300/100.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at matching limits. See UM and UIM coverage.
- Collision and comprehensive while the Altima is financed or leased, and for as long as its value justifies the cost.
- Gap coverage if you owe more on the loan than the car is worth, which is common in the first years of a long loan.
- Rental reimbursement so a repair does not leave you without a way to get to work.
- Glass coverage terms, including whether windshield replacement and camera calibration are covered and what deductible applies.
If you drive for a rideshare or delivery app in your Altima, a personal policy alone usually leaves gaps while the app is on. Our rideshare insurance guide explains the options.
Repairs, parts, and claims on a Altima
Repair costs drive the collision and comprehensive part of your premium, and they decide how smooth a claim feels. A few points apply to almost every modern Altima:
- Sensor calibration. Cameras and radar used by driver-assistance features often sit behind the windshield, in the grille, or in the bumpers. After a windshield replacement or a minor bumper repair, those systems may need calibration, which adds cost. Ask whether your glass coverage includes it.
- Parts. Policies differ on whether repairs use new factory parts, aftermarket parts, or recycled parts. Read the parts language in your policy, and ask about an OEM parts endorsement if it matters to you.
- Choice of shop. In most states you can choose your repair shop. An insurer's preferred shop may offer a repair guarantee, but you are generally not required to use it.
- Supplements. Hidden damage is often found after a bumper or panel comes off. Shops send a supplement to the insurer, which can extend the repair time and the rental you need.
If you are unsure whether to file a small claim, compare the repair estimate with your deductible and ask your agent how a claim might affect renewal. See comprehensive vs. collision coverage for which coverage pays for which kind of damage.
Financed, leased, or paid off: matching coverage to how you own it
Financed or leased
Lenders and leasing companies require collision and comprehensive, often with a maximum deductible such as $500 or $1,000, and they must be listed on the policy as loss payee or additional insured. Leases often require higher liability limits as well. Check the contract before you shop so every quote meets it.
Gap and new car replacement
A new Altima can be worth less than the loan balance for the first few years. Gap coverage pays the difference after a total loss, minus your deductible. Some insurers also offer new car replacement, which pays to replace a recent-model car with a new one of the same make and model. Compare the insurer's price with the gap product offered at the dealership.
Paid off
Once the loan is paid off, you choose the coverage. Many owners keep collision and comprehensive on a Altima of this age and value, but raise the deductible to lower the premium. Revisit the decision every year or two as the vehicle ages.
Ways to save on Nissan Altima insurance
- Compare at least three insurers with identical limits and deductibles; sedans are popular, so insurers compete hard for them.
- Ask about good student, driver training, and distant student discounts if a young driver uses the car.
- Bundle with home or renters insurance, and combine household vehicles on one policy.
- Raise deductibles to an amount you could pay tomorrow.
- Consider pay-per-mile or telematics coverage if you drive less than average or drive carefully.
- Ask about anti-theft devices, paid-in-full, paperless, and autopay discounts.
Avoid saving money by dropping liability limits to the minimum or leaving off household drivers. Both can leave you exposed after a serious crash, and an undisclosed driver can complicate a claim. See our list of car insurance discounts for more ideas.
What you need for a Altima insurance quote
These details help insurers rate the right Altima and match your coverage.
- VIN, model year, and trim. This tells the insurer the exact Altima, including engine, drivetrain, and equipment.
- Every household driver. Names, dates of birth, license numbers, and driving history for anyone who lives with you and drives.
- Current declarations page. So new quotes match your limits, deductibles, and optional coverages.
- How you use the vehicle. Commuting distance, annual mileage, and any business, delivery, or rideshare use.
- Loan or lease details. The lienholder's name and any coverage or deductible requirements in the contract.
Nissan Altima insurance FAQs
Is the Nissan Altima expensive to insure?
It is usually priced like other midsize sedans. Young drivers, high-theft areas, and sport trims can raise the cost.
Is the Altima a common theft target?
It ranked tenth on NICB's list of the most stolen vehicles of 2025. Comprehensive coverage pays for theft.
Is the Altima cheap to insure?
It is often reasonably priced, but there is no single rate. Your age, record, ZIP code, coverage, and trim usually matter more than the model.
Should I keep full coverage on my Altima?
Keep collision and comprehensive while the car is financed or leased, and as long as its value justifies the cost.
Does a young driver change the price much?
Yes. Young drivers usually pay the most for any vehicle. Good student, driver training, and telematics discounts can help.
Can I use my Altima for rideshare or delivery?
Only with the right coverage. Personal policies often exclude app-based driving unless you add an endorsement or the app's coverage applies.
