Michigan Electrical Contractor Insurance: LARA License and Workers’ Comp

Illustration of an electrical panel, conduit, and outlets for michigan electrical contractor insurance

Michigan’s Electrical Administrative Board licenses electrical contractors, and each contractor must be associated with one active Master Electrician. The license has no contractor exam, renews every three years for $300, and sets no state liability or bond requirement. Workers’ comp applies to employers with three or more workers or one full-time worker.

This guide covers Michigan electrical licensing, workers’ comp, coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Michigan, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your electrical business.

Michigan electrical contractor license

  • An electrical contractor must be associated with one active Master Electrician, and a Master can be associated with only one contractor at a time (Contractor License Requirements (Michigan electrician guide)).
  • If the Master’s license lapses, LARA puts the contractor license on hold until the Master renews.
  • The application lists no state liability certificate or bond, though customers, contracts, and permit offices may require them.

  • Tools and equipment (inland marine): meters, benders, lifts, and power tools on job sites or in transit.
