Illinois Electrical Contractor Insurance: Local Licenses and Coverage
Illinois does not issue a statewide electrician license, so cities and counties license electricians and contractors, and a local license is valid only where it was issued. Most municipalities require general liability at a set minimum, and some require a surety bond. In Chicago, an electrical contractor must be owned by or employ a licensed Supervising Electrician.
This guide covers Illinois electrical licensing, Chicago rules, coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Illinois, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your electrical business.

Illinois electrical licensing
- Illinois has no statewide electrician license. Cities and counties issue licenses with their own requirements, and each license is valid only in that jurisdiction (Jobber (Illinois electrician license guide)).
- Most municipalities require general liability at a minimum amount, some require a surety bond, and workers’ compensation is needed once you have employees.
- In Chicago, an electrical contractor must be owned by or employ a licensed Supervising Electrician, who needs two years of experience and must pass the Chicago Electrical Code exam (City of Chicago Supervising Electrician license).
Coverage most Illinois electricians carry
- General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a wiring fault that starts a fire in a customer’s home.
- Business owner’s policy: general liability bundled with property coverage for your shop, wire, and stock.
- Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if an employee is hurt, including shocks and falls.
- Commercial auto: service vans and bucket trucks that carry crews and equipment.
- Tools and equipment (inland marine): meters, benders, lifts, and power tools on job sites or in transit.
- Commercial umbrella: extra limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
