Illinois HVAC Contractor Insurance: Local Licenses and Workers’ Comp
Illinois has no statewide HVAC contractor license, so licensing is local. Chicago requires a city license before permitted work, and Springfield requires registration, an exam, and proof of liability insurance. Illinois requires workers’ compensation for any employer with even one part-time employee, and technicians who handle refrigerant need EPA Section 608 certification.
This guide covers Illinois HVAC licensing, required coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Illinois, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your HVAC business.

Illinois workers’ compensation
Illinois employers with even one part-time employee must carry workers’ compensation. Sole proprietors, partners, corporate officers, and LLC members may opt out for themselves, and construction is treated as extra-hazardous. Knowingly going uninsured can bring fines of up to $500 a day, with a $10,000 minimum, and a stop-work order (Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission).
Coverage most Illinois HVAC contractors carry
- General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a condensate leak that ruins a customer’s ceiling or a furnace install that starts a fire.
- Business owner’s policy: general liability bundled with property coverage for your shop, parts, and equipment stock.
- Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if an employee is hurt, including falls from roofs and attics, burns, and lifting injuries.
- Commercial auto: service vans and trucks that carry technicians, units, and refrigerant.
- Tools and equipment (inland marine): gauges, recovery machines, vacuum pumps, and brazing kits on job sites or in transit.
- Commercial umbrella: extra limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
