Iowa Roofing Contractor Insurance: Contractor Registration and Workers’ Comp
Iowa has no separate roofing license, but roofers who earn at least $2,000 a year from construction must register with the Division of Labor. Registration requires an Iowa unemployment insurance number and, for contractors with employees, a certificate of workers’ compensation. Out-of-state contractors also file a $25,000 bond.
This guide covers Iowa contractor registration, workers’ comp, the out-of-state bond, coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Iowa, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your roofing business.

Coverage most Iowa roofers carry
Iowa sets no statewide general liability minimum for roofers, but clients, general contractors, and cities often require it.
- General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a dropped bundle that damages a car or a leak that ruins a homeowner’s ceiling.
- Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if a crew member is hurt, including falls.
- Commercial auto: trucks and trailers used to haul crews, materials, and debris.
- Tools and equipment (inland marine): ladders, nail guns, and compressors on job sites or in transit.
- Commercial umbrella: extra liability limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
