Alabama Plumbing Contractor Insurance: PGFB Registration and Coverage
Alabama’s Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board (PGFB) certifies plumbers, and any company that bids or performs plumbing must register and designate an active Principal Master. The board sets no statewide liability minimum or license bond, and employers with five or more employees generally must carry workers’ compensation.
This guide covers Alabama plumbing registration, workers’ comp, coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Alabama, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your plumbing business.

Alabama plumbing registration
- Plumbing companies register with the PGFB and designate an active Principal Master (Contractor License Requirements (Alabama plumber guide)).
- Master applicants need one year as a Journeyman Plumber, and starting January 1, 2026, must also pass a Business Law exam.
- Certificates renew each year for $175, plus a $25 business registration renewal.
- No statewide general liability minimum or license bond applies, but cities, permits, and contracts may set one.
Alabama workers’ compensation
Alabama generally requires workers’ compensation for employers with five or more employees, including corporate officers, subject to statutory exceptions (Contractor License Requirements (Alabama plumber guide)).

- Commercial auto: service vans and trucks that carry crews, parts, and equipment.
- Tools and equipment (inland marine): pipe threaders, drain machines, and cameras on job sites or in transit.
- Commercial umbrella: extra limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
