Janitorial Bonds: What They Cover and Who Needs One
A janitorial bond, also called a janitorial service bond, protects your customers if one of your employees steals from them while on the job. It is a type of fidelity bond, not liability insurance. Many clients ask cleaning companies to show proof of bonding, and published prices start around $125 a year for $10,000 of coverage.
This guide explains what a janitorial bond covers, how claims work, who needs one, how much it costs, and what other coverage cleaning businesses usually carry. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency, and a licensed agent can help you compare options.

What a janitorial bond covers
According to SuretyBonds.com, a janitorial service bond covers losses from dishonest acts by your employees, such as theft, fraud, and forgery, while they work for your customers. It is a fidelity bond: it does not cover accidental damage, injuries, or contract disputes. For those, cleaning businesses rely on general liability insurance.
How janitorial bond claims work
If a customer suffers a covered loss, the surety investigates and pays valid claims up to the bond amount. Because it is a surety bond, your company must reimburse the surety for any claim paid. Read the bond’s claim conditions; some bonds require evidence that the loss was caused by an employee before paying. See what a fidelity bond is for more on how these bonds work.
Who needs a janitorial bond
- Commercial cleaning and janitorial companies
- House cleaning and maid services
- Carpet, window, and specialty cleaning companies
- Any service business whose employees work inside clients’ homes or offices
Janitorial bonds are usually optional by law, but customers, building managers, and contracts often require proof of bonding before you start.
