New Mexico HVAC Contractor Insurance: MM-3 and MM-98 Licenses, Bond, and Coverage

Illustration of an HVAC condenser, ductwork, and thermostat for New Mexico HVAC contractor insurance

New Mexico licenses HVAC contractors through the Construction Industries Division (CID). The MM-3 classification covers heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, MM-4 covers heating, cooling, and process piping, and MM-98 combines all mechanical classifications. Each needs four years of experience, and CID requires a $10,000 contractor bond and workers’ compensation for licensed entities.

This guide covers New Mexico HVAC licensing, required coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in New Mexico, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your HVAC business.

Bond, insurance, and workers’ comp

CID requires a $10,000 corporate surety bond at licensing and renewal, and licensed entities must carry workers’ compensation. CID sets no statewide general liability minimum, and the bond does not replace liability insurance (Contractor License Requirements (New Mexico contractor guide)). See our New Mexico contractor license bond guide.

Coverage most New Mexico HVAC contractors carry

  • General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a condensate leak that ruins a customer’s ceiling or a furnace install that starts a fire.
  • Business owner’s policy: general liability bundled with property coverage for your shop, parts, and equipment stock.
  • Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if an employee is hurt, including falls from roofs and attics, burns, and lifting injuries.
  • Commercial auto: service vans and trucks that carry technicians, units, and refrigerant.
  • Tools and equipment (inland marine): gauges, recovery machines, vacuum pumps, and brazing kits on job sites or in transit.
  • Commercial umbrella: extra limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
