Filing a classic or collector vehicle claim

Collector vehicle claims often involve specialized parts and restoration shops, so documentation matters even more than usual. Before you call the claims line, gather:

  • Policy number and the named insured's information.
  • Date, time, and location of the loss.
  • Photos and video of damage, the scene, and any injuries, taken before repairs where safe.
  • Police or incident report number for crashes, thefts, and vandalism.
  • Other parties' information: names, phone numbers, insurers, policy numbers, and vehicle details.
  • Witness contacts and any dashcam footage.
  • Receipts for emergency repairs, towing, or temporary transportation.

Also have records that show the vehicle's condition and value: recent photos, restoration receipts, appraisals, and the agreed value on your policy. Ask how the insurer handles repairs at specialist shops and how long parts sourcing may take.

How agreed value coverage works

Many collector car policies, including Hagerty's, are built around agreed value: you and the insurer agree on the vehicle's value when the policy is written, and that amount is paid if the vehicle is a covered total loss, minus any deductible that applies. That differs from a standard auto policy, which typically pays actual cash value, meaning the vehicle's depreciated market value at the time of loss.

Policy terms vary by insurer. Review your declarations page for the agreed value and conditions.

Collector policies often come with usage conditions, such as mileage limits, secure storage, and a separate vehicle for daily driving. Read them carefully, because violating them can affect coverage.

Keeping your agreed value current

Collector car values can change quickly. If you restore, modify, or add parts to the vehicle, or if similar vehicles sell for more, contact your insurer to review the agreed value. An outdated value is one of the most common reasons owners receive less than they expected after a loss. Keep a folder with appraisals, receipts, and dated photos, and review the value at each renewal.

If you cannot resolve an issue

Most problems are solved fastest by calling the right department with your policy or claim number ready. If you cannot resolve an issue with Hagerty, these steps usually help:

  1. Ask for a supervisor or the claim manager and request a written explanation of any decision.
  2. Put your complaint in writing, including your policy number, claim number, dates, and what you want resolved. Keep copies.
  3. Review your policy language for the coverage, exclusion, or deadline involved.
  4. Contact your state insurance department. Every state has a consumer services division that accepts complaints about insurers and agents. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners also publishes complaint information about insurers.
  5. Consider an attorney or public adjuster for large or disputed claims, especially where significant money is at stake.

Comparing collector car coverage

Several companies offer classic and collector vehicle insurance, and terms differ in mileage allowances, storage requirements, eligibility for newer collectibles, spare parts coverage, and roadside benefits. When you compare, line up agreed values, deductibles, liability limits, and usage rules. Our classic auto insurance page explains how collector coverage works, and our classic auto insurance agency page covers classic car insurance options more broadly.

What collector car policies typically require

Collector vehicle insurance is usually less expensive than standard coverage for the same vehicle because the car is driven less and cared for more carefully. In exchange, insurers commonly set conditions such as:

  • Vehicle type and condition. The vehicle is a classic, antique, collectible, or otherwise special-interest vehicle in good condition. Some insurers also cover newer collectibles and modified cars.
  • Limited use. Pleasure driving, car shows, club events, and occasional use, rather than commuting or daily errands. Some plans set annual mileage tiers.
  • Secure storage. A locked garage or similar enclosed storage.
  • A separate daily vehicle for each licensed driver in the household.
  • Driver eligibility. Age and driving record requirements.

Read your own policy for its exact conditions, because they vary between companies and plans. If your situation changes, for example you start driving the car to work or move it to an outdoor space, tell the insurer before a loss rather than after, since a change in use or storage can affect whether a claim is covered.

Roadside help and transport for collector vehicles

Classic and collector vehicles often need flatbed towing rather than a standard tow truck, both to prevent damage and because some older vehicles cannot be towed conventionally. Hagerty lists a 24/7 roadside assistance line at 888-310-8020. If you have roadside coverage through another source, check whether it provides flatbed service, how far it will tow, and whether it covers trailers you use to transport the vehicle to events.

If you trailer your vehicle, also confirm how the trailer and the vehicle on it are covered while in transit, since liability for the towing vehicle and physical damage to the trailer can fall under different policies.

Project cars, restorations, and modified vehicles

Vehicles under restoration present a special challenge: their value rises as work is completed, and parts may be stored separately from the car. Ask your insurer how it handles vehicles that are not drivable, whether spare parts and tools are covered, and how often you should update the agreed value during a restoration. For heavily modified vehicles, document every modification with receipts and photos, and make sure the insurer has agreed to the value of those changes. Undisclosed modifications can lead to disputes after a loss.

Liability, umbrella coverage, and your everyday cars

Collector car policies include liability coverage, but limits are chosen separately from your everyday auto policy. Owners of valuable collections often carry significant assets, so it is worth coordinating limits across all vehicles and considering a personal umbrella policy, which adds liability protection above your auto and home policies. Umbrella insurers usually require minimum underlying liability limits on every vehicle, including collector cars, so confirm those requirements before you set limits. Our umbrella insurance page explains how umbrella coverage works.

If several drivers in your household use the collector vehicle, make sure each is listed according to the policy's requirements. Also check uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on collector policies. A crash with an underinsured driver can be costly when the vehicle and its occupants are both at stake.
