Auto Insurance in Queens, NY: Coverage for Expressway Commutes, Airport Traffic, and Families
Queens is New York City's largest borough by area, with more car-owning households than most of the city. Drivers use the Long Island Expressway, Grand Central Parkway, and Van Wyck Expressway, share roads with JFK and LaGuardia airport traffic, and in the Rockaways face coastal flooding.
This guide covers the coverage questions Queens drivers ask most, the New York rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.
Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Queens drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Queens, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Queens: what shapes your rate
Queens drivers face some of the most congested highways in the region.
Expressway commuting
The LIE, Grand Central Parkway, Van Wyck, and Cross Island Parkway are packed at rush hour. Liability limits above the minimum and SUM coverage help protect you.
Airport traffic
Taxis, ride-hail cars, and travelers unfamiliar with the roads crowd the routes around JFK and LaGuardia.
Coastal flooding
The Rockaways and other low-lying areas can flood in major storms. Flood damage to a car is covered under comprehensive.
Families and teen drivers
Many Queens households have several drivers. Ask about good student discounts and the PIRP course.
Coverage priorities for Queens drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Daily expressway commuter | Higher liability and SUM | Crashes with underinsured drivers. |
| Home in the Rockaways | Comprehensive | Flood damage is a comprehensive claim. |
| A teen joining the policy | Higher liability and student discounts | New drivers raise claim risk. |
| Car parked on the street | Comprehensive and collision | Theft, vandalism, and parked-car damage. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
New York rules every Queens driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident | Injuries you cause to others |
| Death liability | $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident | Deaths you cause in a crash |
| Property damage liability | $10,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
| No-fault personal injury protection | $50,000 | Medical bills, a share of lost wages, and some other expenses for you and your passengers, regardless of fault |
| Uninsured motorist bodily injury | $25,000 / $50,000 | Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance |
- No-fault insurance. New York is a no-fault state. Your own PIP pays your medical bills and part of your lost wages after a crash, no matter who caused it. You can sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering only if your injury meets the state's "serious injury" threshold.
- Fault still matters. For vehicle damage and serious-injury claims, New York uses pure comparative negligence, so your recovery is reduced by your share of fault.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage is required. Optional supplementary coverage (SUM) raises those limits and adds underinsured protection, often up to your liability limits. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Insurance reporting and lapses. Insurers report coverage to the DMV electronically, and out-of-state insurance is not accepted for a New York-registered vehicle. If coverage lapses, the DMV can suspend your registration, and longer lapses can lead to license suspension.
- Defensive driving discount. Completing a DMV-approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program course gives the principal operator at least a 10% reduction in the base rate of liability and collision premiums for three years.
- State minimums are a floor. A $10,000 property damage limit is easily exceeded by a crash with a newer vehicle, leaving you responsible for the rest.
How to compare Queens quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| No-fault PIP and additional PIP | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

Queens auto insurance FAQs
Is flood damage to my car covered in the Rockaways?
Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible. A home flood policy does not cover vehicles.
Should I add SUM coverage?
Supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (SUM) raises your protection above the 25/50 minimum when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance. It is usually inexpensive relative to what it protects.
Does no-fault cover my passengers?
Yes. New York PIP covers you, your household members, and your passengers for medical bills and part of lost wages, regardless of fault, up to the policy limits.
How can I lower my Queens premium?
Completing a DMV-approved defensive driving course (PIRP) gives the principal operator at least a 10% reduction on liability and collision base rates for three years. Comparing several insurers helps too.
Is New York a no-fault state?
Yes. Your own personal injury protection pays your medical bills and part of your lost wages regardless of fault. You can sue the other driver for pain and suffering only if your injury meets New York's serious injury threshold.
Do I need full coverage in Queens?
New York requires liability, $50,000 of no-fault PIP, and uninsured motorist coverage. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.
How can I lower my car insurance in New York?
Completing a DMV-approved defensive driving course (PIRP) gives at least a 10% reduction on liability and collision base rates for three years. Comparing several insurers and keeping a clean record also help.
