Auto Insurance in Brooklyn, NY: Coverage for Street Parking, the BQE, and New York No-Fault Rules

Illustration of a car on a road leading to a city skyline with the text Auto Insurance Brooklyn, New York

Brooklyn drivers deal with tight street parking, alternate-side rules, double-parked delivery trucks, and congested roads like the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Belt Parkway. Those conditions, plus New York's no-fault system, make the right coverage mix important.

This guide covers the coverage questions Brooklyn drivers ask most, the New York rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Brooklyn drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Brooklyn, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Brooklyn: what shapes your rate

Dense traffic and on-street parking drive most Brooklyn claims.

Street parking

Cars parked on the street get sideswiped, dinged, and hit by drivers who leave. Collision covers damage to your car, and comprehensive covers theft and vandalism.

BQE and Belt Parkway

Heavy stop-and-go traffic on the BQE, Belt Parkway, and Prospect Expressway means frequent rear-end crashes. Property damage limits well above $10,000 help protect you when the other car is expensive.

Cyclists and pedestrians

Brooklyn has busy bike lanes and heavy foot traffic. Higher bodily injury limits protect your assets if you injure someone.

Flooding

Low-lying waterfront neighborhoods can flood in major storms. Flood damage to a car is covered under comprehensive.

New York rules every Brooklyn driver should know

New York minimum coverage
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accidentInjuries you cause to others
Death liability$50,000 per person / $100,000 per accidentDeaths you cause in a crash
Property damage liability$10,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
No-fault personal injury protection$50,000Medical bills, a share of lost wages, and some other expenses for you and your passengers, regardless of fault
Uninsured motorist bodily injury$25,000 / $50,000Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance
  • No-fault insurance. New York is a no-fault state. Your own PIP pays your medical bills and part of your lost wages after a crash, no matter who caused it. You can sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering only if your injury meets the state's "serious injury" threshold.
  • Fault still matters. For vehicle damage and serious-injury claims, New York uses pure comparative negligence, so your recovery is reduced by your share of fault.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage is required. Optional supplementary coverage (SUM) raises those limits and adds underinsured protection, often up to your liability limits. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Insurance reporting and lapses. Insurers report coverage to the DMV electronically, and out-of-state insurance is not accepted for a New York-registered vehicle. If coverage lapses, the DMV can suspend your registration, and longer lapses can lead to license suspension.
  • Defensive driving discount. Completing a DMV-approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program course gives the principal operator at least a 10% reduction in the base rate of liability and collision premiums for three years.
  • State minimums are a floor. A $10,000 property damage limit is easily exceeded by a crash with a newer vehicle, leaving you responsible for the rest.

  • Low-mileage pricing for drivers who mostly use the subway.
  • Renters and auto bundle where the combined price is lower.
  • The basics. Multi-policy, paid-in-full, automatic payment, paperless, continuous insurance, and vehicle safety discounts, where the insurer offers them.

Discount names, amounts, and availability vary by insurer.

Tickets, an accident, or a lapse? You still have options. Some insurers specialize in higher-risk drivers. See high-risk auto insurance or call 888-387-3687.

Brooklyn auto insurance FAQs

Why is car insurance so expensive in Brooklyn?

Dense traffic, frequent claims, theft, and high repair and medical costs all push rates up. Comparing several insurers and completing a PIRP course are two of the best ways to save.

Should I add SUM coverage?

Supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (SUM) raises your protection above the 25/50 minimum when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance. It is usually inexpensive relative to what it protects.

Is a parked-car hit-and-run covered?

Usually under collision coverage, minus your deductible. Report it to the police promptly.

How can I lower my Brooklyn premium?

Completing a DMV-approved defensive driving course (PIRP) gives the principal operator at least a 10% reduction on liability and collision base rates for three years. Comparing several insurers helps too.

Is New York a no-fault state?

Yes. Your own personal injury protection pays your medical bills and part of your lost wages regardless of fault. You can sue the other driver for pain and suffering only if your injury meets New York's serious injury threshold.

Do I need full coverage in Brooklyn?

New York requires liability, $50,000 of no-fault PIP, and uninsured motorist coverage. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

How can I lower my car insurance in New York?

Completing a DMV-approved defensive driving course (PIRP) gives at least a 10% reduction on liability and collision base rates for three years. Comparing several insurers and keeping a clean record also help.
