Driving in The Bronx: what shapes your rate

Truck traffic and dense neighborhoods shape Bronx driving.

Cross Bronx and Major Deegan

The Cross Bronx Expressway carries heavy truck traffic between New Jersey and New England. Crashes with large vehicles can be severe, so liability limits above the minimum and SUM coverage matter.

Street parking

Parked cars get sideswiped and hit by drivers who leave. Collision covers damage to your car; comprehensive covers theft and vandalism.

Uninsured drivers

Uninsured motorist coverage is required in New York, and SUM raises those limits. It protects you when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance.

Older vehicles

If your car is older and paid off, compare whether collision is still worth the premium.

New York rules every The Bronx driver should know

New York minimum coverage
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accidentInjuries you cause to others
Death liability$50,000 per person / $100,000 per accidentDeaths you cause in a crash
Property damage liability$10,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
No-fault personal injury protection$50,000Medical bills, a share of lost wages, and some other expenses for you and your passengers, regardless of fault
Uninsured motorist bodily injury$25,000 / $50,000Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance
  • No-fault insurance. New York is a no-fault state. Your own PIP pays your medical bills and part of your lost wages after a crash, no matter who caused it. You can sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering only if your injury meets the state's "serious injury" threshold.
  • Fault still matters. For vehicle damage and serious-injury claims, New York uses pure comparative negligence, so your recovery is reduced by your share of fault.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage is required. Optional supplementary coverage (SUM) raises those limits and adds underinsured protection, often up to your liability limits. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Insurance reporting and lapses. Insurers report coverage to the DMV electronically, and out-of-state insurance is not accepted for a New York-registered vehicle. If coverage lapses, the DMV can suspend your registration, and longer lapses can lead to license suspension.
  • Defensive driving discount. Completing a DMV-approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program course gives the principal operator at least a 10% reduction in the base rate of liability and collision premiums for three years.
  • State minimums are a floor. A $10,000 property damage limit is easily exceeded by a crash with a newer vehicle, leaving you responsible for the rest.

The Bronx auto insurance FAQs

Should I add SUM coverage in the Bronx?

Supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (SUM) raises your protection above the 25/50 minimum when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance. It is usually inexpensive relative to what it protects.

Is car theft covered?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible.

Can I sue the other driver after a crash?

For injuries, only if they meet New York's serious injury threshold; otherwise your own no-fault PIP pays. Vehicle damage claims go against the at-fault driver.

How can I lower my Bronx premium?

Completing a DMV-approved defensive driving course (PIRP) gives the principal operator at least a 10% reduction on liability and collision base rates for three years. Comparing several insurers helps too.

Is New York a no-fault state?

Yes. Your own personal injury protection pays your medical bills and part of your lost wages regardless of fault. You can sue the other driver for pain and suffering only if your injury meets New York's serious injury threshold.

Do I need full coverage in The Bronx?

New York requires liability, $50,000 of no-fault PIP, and uninsured motorist coverage. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

How can I lower my car insurance in New York?

Completing a DMV-approved defensive driving course (PIRP) gives at least a 10% reduction on liability and collision base rates for three years. Comparing several insurers and keeping a clean record also help.
