Auto Insurance in Arlington, VA: Coverage for DC Commutes, Low Mileage, and Garage Parking
Arlington is one of the most transit-oriented communities in the country, next to Washington, DC and home to the Pentagon. Many residents drive only occasionally, park in garages or on the street, and commute on I-66, I-395, or the George Washington Parkway when they do drive.
This guide covers the coverage questions Arlington drivers ask most, the Virginia rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.
Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Arlington drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Arlington, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Arlington: what shapes your rate
In Arlington, many drivers use their cars less than average.
Transit and low mileage
Many residents commute by Metro and drive less. Report your actual annual mileage; low-mileage or usage-based programs can lower your price.
Street parking
Parked cars get sideswiped and broken into. Collision and comprehensive cover your own car; belongings stolen from it are usually covered by renters insurance.
I-66 and I-395
Rush-hour tolls and congestion on I-66 and I-395 lead to frequent crashes. Liability limits above the minimum and UM/UIM help protect you.
Non-owners
If you do not own a car but rent or borrow one, a non-owner policy can provide your own liability coverage.
Coverage priorities for Arlington drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Metro rider who drives less | Accurate low mileage or usage-based program | Pay closer to how much you drive. |
| Car kept in a garage | Comprehensive and collision | Garage damage and theft. |
| No car, but rent sometimes | Non-owner policy | Liability when you rent or borrow. |
| Significant assets | Higher liability and an umbrella | Assets are exposed in a serious at-fault crash. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
Virginia rules every Arlington driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident | Injuries you cause to others |
| Property damage liability | $25,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
| Uninsured/underinsured motorist | At least the same minimums | Your injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no or too little insurance |
- Insurance is now mandatory. Virginia ended the option to pay a $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee instead of buying insurance on July 1, 2024. Owners who cannot show proof of coverage when asked can have their license, registration, and plates suspended and owe a $600 noncompliance fee.
- Higher minimums. Minimum bodily injury limits rose from 30/60 to 50/100 on January 1, 2025, and minimum UM/UIM limits rose with them.
- Stronger underinsured motorist coverage. Since July 1, 2023, your underinsured motorist coverage is no longer reduced by the at-fault driver's liability payment unless you elect that in writing, so it can pay on top of their coverage. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Contributory negligence. Virginia is one of the few states that still follow contributory negligence. If you are found even slightly at fault, you may be barred from recovering from the other driver, which makes your own collision, medical payments, and UM/UIM coverages especially important.
- SR-22 and FR-44. Some violations require an SR-22, generally for three years. After a DUI, Virginia requires an FR-44 with higher limits of 100/200/50, generally for three years. See high-risk auto insurance.
How to compare Arlington quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| Medical expense benefits | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

Arlington auto insurance FAQs
I do not own a car. Do I need insurance to rent one?
A non-owner policy gives you your own liability coverage when you rent or borrow a car.
Does my Virginia policy cover me in DC?
Yes. U.S. auto policies cover you in other states and DC. Injury and fault rules there differ, so a claim may follow local law.
How does underinsured motorist coverage work in Virginia now?
Since July 2023, your underinsured motorist coverage generally pays on top of the at-fault driver's liability payment instead of being reduced by it, unless you elect otherwise in writing. Higher UM/UIM limits are one of the best values in Virginia.
Should I carry medical expense benefits?
Medical expense benefits pay medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault, which matters in a contributory negligence state. The coverage is optional, so ask for it.
Can I still pay a fee instead of buying insurance in Virginia?
No. Virginia ended the uninsured motor vehicle fee option on July 1, 2024. Every registered vehicle must now carry insurance.
Do I need full coverage in Arlington?
Virginia requires 50/100/25 liability and UM/UIM coverage. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.
What does contributory negligence mean for my claim?
If you are found even slightly at fault, you may not be able to recover from the other driver. Your own collision, medical expense, and UM/UIM coverages help protect you.
