Auto Insurance in Alexandria, VA: Coverage for DC Commutes, Street Parking, and Low Mileage

Illustration of a car on a road leading to a city skyline with the text Auto Insurance Alexandria, Virginia

Alexandria sits just across the Potomac from Washington, where commuters use I-395, the Capital Beltway, and US-1, or ride Metro. Old Town's narrow streets and tight street parking add their own risks.

This guide covers the coverage questions Alexandria drivers ask most, the Virginia rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Alexandria drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Alexandria, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Alexandria: what shapes your rate

Congestion and parking shape most Alexandria claims.

DC commuting

I-395, the Capital Beltway, and US-1 are among the most congested roads in the region. Liability limits above the minimum and UM/UIM help protect you.

Transit and low mileage

Many residents commute by Metro and drive less. Report your actual annual mileage; low-mileage or usage-based programs can lower your price.

Street parking

Parked cars get sideswiped and broken into. Collision and comprehensive cover your own car; belongings stolen from it are usually covered by renters insurance.

Driving in DC and Maryland

Your Virginia policy covers you when you drive in DC and Maryland. Their fault and injury rules differ, so ask how your coverage responds.

Virginia rules every Alexandria driver should know

Virginia minimum coverage (policies effective on or after January 1, 2025)
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury liability$50,000 per person / $100,000 per accidentInjuries you cause to others
Property damage liability$25,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
Uninsured/underinsured motoristAt least the same minimumsYour injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no or too little insurance
  • Insurance is now mandatory. Virginia ended the option to pay a $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee instead of buying insurance on July 1, 2024. Owners who cannot show proof of coverage when asked can have their license, registration, and plates suspended and owe a $600 noncompliance fee.
  • Higher minimums. Minimum bodily injury limits rose from 30/60 to 50/100 on January 1, 2025, and minimum UM/UIM limits rose with them.
  • Stronger underinsured motorist coverage. Since July 1, 2023, your underinsured motorist coverage is no longer reduced by the at-fault driver's liability payment unless you elect that in writing, so it can pay on top of their coverage. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Contributory negligence. Virginia is one of the few states that still follow contributory negligence. If you are found even slightly at fault, you may be barred from recovering from the other driver, which makes your own collision, medical payments, and UM/UIM coverages especially important.
  • SR-22 and FR-44. Some violations require an SR-22, generally for three years. After a DUI, Virginia requires an FR-44 with higher limits of 100/200/50, generally for three years. See high-risk auto insurance.

Alexandria auto insurance FAQs

Does my Virginia policy cover me in DC?

Yes. U.S. auto policies cover you in other states and DC. Injury and fault rules there differ, so a claim may follow local law.

Does riding Metro lower my car insurance?

It can. Lower annual mileage can reduce your premium with many insurers.

How does underinsured motorist coverage work in Virginia now?

Since July 2023, your underinsured motorist coverage generally pays on top of the at-fault driver's liability payment instead of being reduced by it, unless you elect otherwise in writing. Higher UM/UIM limits are one of the best values in Virginia.

Should I carry medical expense benefits?

Medical expense benefits pay medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault, which matters in a contributory negligence state. The coverage is optional, so ask for it.

Can I still pay a fee instead of buying insurance in Virginia?

No. Virginia ended the uninsured motor vehicle fee option on July 1, 2024. Every registered vehicle must now carry insurance.

Do I need full coverage in Alexandria?

Virginia requires 50/100/25 liability and UM/UIM coverage. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

What does contributory negligence mean for my claim?

If you are found even slightly at fault, you may not be able to recover from the other driver. Your own collision, medical expense, and UM/UIM coverages help protect you.
