Illustration of a car on a coastal road beside the water with the text Auto Insurance St. Petersburg, Florida

St. Petersburg sits on the Pinellas peninsula, surrounded by Tampa Bay and the Gulf, and many neighborhoods are low-lying. Storm surge from recent hurricanes flooded thousands of cars here, and commuters rely on the bridges to Tampa.

This guide covers the coverage questions St. Petersburg drivers ask most, the Florida rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves St. Petersburg drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in St. Petersburg, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in St. Petersburg: what shapes your rate

Water is the biggest risk to many St. Petersburg cars.

Hurricanes and flooding

Wind, storm surge, and flood damage to a car are covered under comprehensive, not by a home flood policy. Insurers usually stop writing new coverage once a storm watch is issued, so set it up before hurricane season.

Bridge commutes

The Howard Frankland, Gandy, and Courtney Campbell bridges carry commuters to Tampa. A crash can back up traffic for miles.

Retirees and seasonal residents

Retirees may save with low-mileage pricing. Seasonal residents should keep Florida's required PIP and property damage in force while away.

Bodily injury exposure

Florida does not require bodily injury liability for most drivers, so a minimum policy will not pay for injuries you cause. Carrying it, along with uninsured motorist coverage, protects your savings if you are sued.

Coverage priorities for St. Petersburg drivers

Situations St. Petersburg drivers often bring to us

Florida rules every St. Petersburg driver should know

Florida minimum coverage for most vehicles
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Personal injury protection (PIP)$10,000Your own medical bills and part of lost wages, regardless of fault
Property damage liability$10,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
Bodily injury liabilityNot required for most driversInjuries you cause to others; strongly recommended
  • No-fault PIP. Florida is a no-fault state. Your own PIP pays first for your injuries no matter who caused the crash. To use PIP you generally must get medical care within 14 days, and medical benefits are limited to $2,500 unless a qualifying provider finds an emergency medical condition. Bills to repeal PIP were filed in 2026 but did not pass.
  • Bodily injury liability is not required, but it matters. Florida does not require most drivers to carry bodily injury liability, so a minimum policy does not pay for injuries you cause to others. That leaves your savings exposed if you are sued, which is why most drivers should carry it.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage. When you buy bodily injury liability, uninsured motorist coverage is included unless you reject it in writing. With many uninsured drivers on Florida roads, it is one of the most valuable coverages you can carry. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. Since Florida's 2023 tort reform, you generally cannot recover damages from another driver if you are more than 50% at fault. At 50% or less, your recovery is reduced by your share.
  • SR-22 and FR-44. Some violations require an SR-22. After a DUI conviction, Florida requires an FR-44 with much higher liability limits of 100/300/50, generally kept for at least three years. See high-risk auto insurance.
  • Keep coverage continuous. Insurers report coverage to the state, and a lapse in PIP or property damage coverage can lead to license and registration suspension and reinstatement fees.

St. Petersburg auto insurance FAQs

Is storm surge damage to my car covered?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible.

Can I add comprehensive when a hurricane is coming?

Usually not. Insurers commonly suspend new coverage and changes once a hurricane watch or warning is issued for your area. Set up comprehensive before hurricane season.

What if I spend summers out of state?

Florida requires PIP and property damage liability on registered vehicles. Ask about keeping required coverage in force while reducing the rest, so you avoid a lapse.

Should I carry uninsured motorist coverage?

Many Florida drivers carry no bodily injury coverage at all. Uninsured motorist coverage pays for your injuries beyond PIP when the at-fault driver cannot. It is included with bodily injury liability unless you reject it in writing.

Is Florida still a no-fault state?

Yes. Bills to repeal PIP were filed in 2026 but died in committee, so Florida still requires $10,000 of PIP and $10,000 of property damage liability.

Do I need bodily injury liability in St. Petersburg?

Florida does not require it for most drivers, but without it your policy will not pay for injuries you cause to others, and you could be sued personally. Most drivers should carry it, along with uninsured motorist coverage.

Do I need full coverage in St. Petersburg?

Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them. In Florida, comprehensive is also what pays for hurricane and flood damage to your car.
