Auto Insurance in Tampa, FL: Coverage for Bay Bridges, MacDill Families, and Storm Surge

Illustration of a car on a coastal road beside the water with the text Auto Insurance Tampa, Florida

Tampa commuters rely on I-4, I-275, and the bridges across Tampa Bay, including the Howard Frankland, where one crash can stall traffic for miles. MacDill Air Force Base brings military households, and recent hurricanes have shown how much storm surge can damage cars.

This guide covers the coverage questions Tampa drivers ask most, the Florida rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Tampa drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Tampa, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Tampa: what shapes your rate

Bridges and storms shape most Tampa claims.

Bridge and interstate commuting

The I-4/I-275 interchange and the bay bridges are major bottlenecks. Bodily injury liability and uninsured motorist coverage help protect you.

MacDill households

Service members who move or deploy benefit from military discounts and planning coverage carefully so required PIP and property damage stay in force.

Hurricanes and flooding

Wind, storm surge, and flood damage to a car are covered under comprehensive, not by a home flood policy. Insurers usually stop writing new coverage once a storm watch is issued, so set it up before hurricane season.

Students

University of South Florida and University of Tampa students on a parent's policy may qualify for good student discounts.

Florida rules every Tampa driver should know

Florida minimum coverage for most vehicles
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Personal injury protection (PIP)$10,000Your own medical bills and part of lost wages, regardless of fault
Property damage liability$10,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
Bodily injury liabilityNot required for most driversInjuries you cause to others; strongly recommended
  • No-fault PIP. Florida is a no-fault state. Your own PIP pays first for your injuries no matter who caused the crash. To use PIP you generally must get medical care within 14 days, and medical benefits are limited to $2,500 unless a qualifying provider finds an emergency medical condition. Bills to repeal PIP were filed in 2026 but did not pass.
  • Bodily injury liability is not required, but it matters. Florida does not require most drivers to carry bodily injury liability, so a minimum policy does not pay for injuries you cause to others. That leaves your savings exposed if you are sued, which is why most drivers should carry it.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage. When you buy bodily injury liability, uninsured motorist coverage is included unless you reject it in writing. With many uninsured drivers on Florida roads, it is one of the most valuable coverages you can carry. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. Since Florida's 2023 tort reform, you generally cannot recover damages from another driver if you are more than 50% at fault. At 50% or less, your recovery is reduced by your share.
  • SR-22 and FR-44. Some violations require an SR-22. After a DUI conviction, Florida requires an FR-44 with much higher liability limits of 100/300/50, generally kept for at least three years. See high-risk auto insurance.
  • Keep coverage continuous. Insurers report coverage to the state, and a lapse in PIP or property damage coverage can lead to license and registration suspension and reinstatement fees.

Discounts worth asking about in Tampa

  • Military and affiliation discounts where offered.
  • Good student for teen and college drivers.
  • Home and auto bundle, compared on the total of both policies.
  • The basics. Multi-policy, paid-in-full, automatic payment, paperless, continuous insurance, and vehicle safety discounts, where the insurer offers them.

Tickets, an accident, or a lapse? You still have options. Some insurers specialize in higher-risk drivers. See high-risk auto insurance or call 888-387-3687.

Tampa auto insurance FAQs

Is storm surge damage to my car covered?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible. Liability-only and PIP-only policies do not cover your own car.

Should I carry uninsured motorist coverage?

Many Florida drivers carry no bodily injury coverage at all. Uninsured motorist coverage pays for your injuries beyond PIP when the at-fault driver cannot. It is included with bodily injury liability unless you reject it in writing.

Can I add comprehensive when a hurricane is coming?

Usually not. Insurers commonly suspend new coverage and changes once a hurricane watch or warning is issued for your area. Set up comprehensive before hurricane season.

Can my child stay on our policy while at USF?

Often, yes, if they are still part of your household. The policy should show the car is garaged in Tampa.

Is Florida still a no-fault state?

Yes. Bills to repeal PIP were filed in 2026 but died in committee, so Florida still requires $10,000 of PIP and $10,000 of property damage liability.

Do I need bodily injury liability in Tampa?

Florida does not require it for most drivers, but without it your policy will not pay for injuries you cause to others, and you could be sued personally. Most drivers should carry it, along with uninsured motorist coverage.

Do I need full coverage in Tampa?

Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them. In Florida, comprehensive is also what pays for hurricane and flood damage to your car.
