Dodge Charger Car Insurance: Costs, Coverage, and Theft Risk

Insurance company logos in this graphic are shown for identification only and do not mean Blake Insurance Group represents or is endorsed by each company.

Dodge Charger car insurance varies more by trim than almost any other popular car. A V6 Charger SXT can be priced like an ordinary sedan, while a Hemi V8 or supercharged SRT Hellcat can cost far more, and some high-performance Chargers have drawn heavy theft attention. Dodge has since replaced the gas sedan with an all-new Charger.

This guide covers how Charger trims affect insurance, the shift to the new Charger Daytona, theft precautions, coverage for young drivers, and ways to save. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many drivers.

What drives the cost of insuring a Dodge Charger

Insurers price a Dodge Charger from two sets of facts: the vehicle itself and the people who drive it. For the Charger, the vehicle-related factors that matter most are:

  • Trim and engine. Hemi and Hellcat models have far more power and much higher values than V6 cars
  • Theft exposure. Performance Chargers have been frequent theft targets, which can raise comprehensive costs
  • Driver profile. Young drivers in a V8 Charger can face very high premiums, and some insurers may decline
  • New generation. The electric Charger Daytona adds battery and high-voltage repair considerations

Driver facts usually carry more weight than the vehicle: the ages and records of everyone in the household, past claims, the ZIP code where the Charger is parked, annual mileage, a credit-based insurance score where state law allows it, and the limits and deductibles you choose. For context, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported an average auto insurance expenditure of $1,281.60 nationwide in 2023. Individual premiums land far above and below that figure, so treat it as background rather than a benchmark for your own quote.

Because every insurer weighs these facts differently, two companies can quote the same Charger and the same driver hundreds of dollars apart. Our car insurance calculator shows how coverage choices move a premium, and our guide to car insurance quotes explains how to keep comparisons fair.

Theft risk and prevention

High-horsepower Chargers and Challengers have drawn significant theft attention, and insurance industry data has shown unusually high theft claim rates for some of these models. Comprehensive coverage pays if your Charger is stolen or vandalized, so keep it, especially for V8 and Hellcat models.

  • Park in a locked garage whenever possible.
  • Use a steering wheel lock and consider an aftermarket immobilizer, kill switch, or tracking device.
  • Ask a dealer whether security software updates are available for your car.
  • Do not leave key fobs in the car or near an exterior door at home.
  • Ask about anti-theft discounts.

Some insurers may require anti-theft equipment or limit coverage for certain high-theft models in some areas. An independent agent can compare insurers' rules.

Young drivers and the Charger

A Charger is a popular first car for young drivers, but performance trims can be very expensive to insure for anyone under 25. If a young driver will use the car:

  • Choose a V6 model rather than a Hemi or Hellcat.
  • Ask about good student, driver training, and telematics discounts.
  • Consider whether the young driver can be rated on a different household vehicle.
  • Keep liability limits high; a serious crash can exceed basic limits.

The Charger's sedan sibling was the Chrysler 300.

Coverage to consider for a Dodge Charger

  • Liability above the state minimum. Minimum limits are a legal floor and can be exhausted quickly by one serious injury claim. Many drivers choose 100/300/100.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at matching limits. See UM and UIM coverage.
  • Collision and comprehensive while the Charger is financed or leased, and for as long as its value justifies the cost.
  • Gap coverage if you owe more on the loan than the car is worth, which is common in the first years of a long loan.
  • Rental reimbursement so a repair does not leave you without a way to get to work.
  • Glass coverage terms, including whether windshield replacement and camera calibration are covered and what deductible applies.

If you drive for a rideshare or delivery app in your Charger, a personal policy alone usually leaves gaps while the app is on. Our rideshare insurance guide explains the options.

Repairs, parts, and claims on a Charger

Repair costs drive the collision and comprehensive part of your premium, and they decide how smooth a claim feels. A few points apply to almost every modern Charger:

  • Sensor calibration. Cameras and radar used by driver-assistance features often sit behind the windshield, in the grille, or in the bumpers. After a windshield replacement or a minor bumper repair, those systems may need calibration, which adds cost. Ask whether your glass coverage includes it.
  • Parts. Policies differ on whether repairs use new factory parts, aftermarket parts, or recycled parts. Read the parts language in your policy, and ask about an OEM parts endorsement if it matters to you.
  • Choice of shop. In most states you can choose your repair shop. An insurer's preferred shop may offer a repair guarantee, but you are generally not required to use it.
  • Supplements. Hidden damage is often found after a bumper or panel comes off. Shops send a supplement to the insurer, which can extend the repair time and the rental you need.

If you are unsure whether to file a small claim, compare the repair estimate with your deductible and ask your agent how a claim might affect renewal. See comprehensive vs. collision coverage for which coverage pays for which kind of damage.

Financed, leased, or paid off: matching coverage to how you own it

Financed or leased

Lenders and leasing companies require collision and comprehensive, often with a maximum deductible such as $500 or $1,000, and they must be listed on the policy as loss payee or additional insured. Leases often require higher liability limits as well. Check the contract before you shop so every quote meets it.

Gap and new car replacement

A new Charger can be worth less than the loan balance for the first few years. Gap coverage pays the difference after a total loss, minus your deductible. Some insurers also offer new car replacement, which pays to replace a recent-model car with a new one of the same make and model. Compare the insurer's price with the gap product offered at the dealership.

Paid off

Once the loan is paid off, you choose the coverage. Many owners keep collision and comprehensive on a Charger of this age and value, but raise the deductible to lower the premium. Revisit the decision every year or two as the vehicle ages.

Ways to save on Dodge Charger insurance

  1. Compare at least three insurers with identical limits and deductibles; sedans are popular, so insurers compete hard for them.
  2. Ask about good student, driver training, and distant student discounts if a young driver uses the car.
  3. Bundle with home or renters insurance, and combine household vehicles on one policy.
  4. Raise deductibles to an amount you could pay tomorrow.
  5. Consider pay-per-mile or telematics coverage if you drive less than average or drive carefully.
  6. Ask about anti-theft devices, paid-in-full, paperless, and autopay discounts.

Avoid saving money by dropping liability limits to the minimum or leaving off household drivers. Both can leave you exposed after a serious crash, and an undisclosed driver can complicate a claim. See our list of car insurance discounts for more ideas.

What you need for a Charger insurance quote

These details help insurers rate the right Charger and match your coverage.

  1. VIN, model year, and trim. This tells the insurer the exact Charger, including engine, drivetrain, and equipment.
  2. Every household driver. Names, dates of birth, license numbers, and driving history for anyone who lives with you and drives.
  3. Current declarations page. So new quotes match your limits, deductibles, and optional coverages.
  4. How you use the vehicle. Commuting distance, annual mileage, and any business, delivery, or rideshare use.
  5. Loan or lease details. The lienholder's name and any coverage or deductible requirements in the contract.

Dodge Charger insurance FAQs

Is the Dodge Charger expensive to insure?

V6 models can be reasonably priced. Hemi and Hellcat models, young drivers, and high-theft areas can make it expensive.

Why is the Charger Hellcat so expensive to insure?

Its power, high value, and history as a theft target all raise the risk insurers price.

Is the new Charger Daytona expensive to insure?

It is a new, high-value electric car, so expect physical damage coverage to reflect battery and repair costs. Quote the VIN.

Is the Charger cheap to insure?

It is often reasonably priced, but there is no single rate. Your age, record, ZIP code, coverage, and trim usually matter more than the model.

Should I keep full coverage on my Charger?

Keep collision and comprehensive while the car is financed or leased, and as long as its value justifies the cost.

Does a young driver change the price much?

Yes. Young drivers usually pay the most for any vehicle. Good student, driver training, and telematics discounts can help.

Can I use my Charger for rideshare or delivery?

Only with the right coverage. Personal policies often exclude app-based driving unless you add an endorsement or the app's coverage applies.
