Dodge Charger Insurance by Trim and Model Year

Blue Dodge Charger sedan with popular trims listed, SXT, GT, R/T, Scat Pack, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Redeye, and Daytona, plus insurance company logos
Insurance company logos in this graphic are shown for identification only and do not mean Blake Insurance Group represents or is endorsed by each company.

Dodge Charger insurance by trim and model year varies more than for almost any other car. A V6 SXT from the 2010s, a HEMI V8 R/T, a supercharged Hellcat, the electric Charger Daytona, and the new twin-turbo SIXPACK are rated very differently, and some V8 Chargers have had extremely high theft claim rates.

This guide walks through the Charger's generations and trims, explains which ones insurers view as higher risk and why, and shows how to protect your car and your budget. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many Charger owners.

Charger generations at a glance

Insurers rate each Charger by its VIN, which identifies the model year, engine, and trim. The table below groups the Charger's history into eras that matter for insurance.

Trim lists are simplified. Exact availability varies by year. Sources: Dodge and J.D. Power for 2026 specifications; PASMAG on the 2026 lineup.

Two Chargers from the same year can sit at opposite ends of the insurance spectrum. Widebody versions of some V8 and Hellcat trims add wider fenders and wheels that are more expensive to repair. Always quote the exact trim.

How trims affect Charger insurance

V6 trims: SE, SXT, and GT

The V6 Chargers are the most affordable to insure in most cases. The GT adds all-wheel drive on many model years and sportier styling, but it keeps the V6. For a younger driver or anyone watching costs, a V6 Charger is usually the practical choice.

HEMI V8 trims: R/T, Scat Pack, and SRT 392

The V8 trims add substantial power. Insurers typically rate them higher, and HLDI's theft data showed HEMI V8 Chargers from 2020 to 2022 with theft claims around 20 times the average. Comprehensive coverage on these trims can be costly in areas with frequent thefts.

Supercharged trims: SRT Hellcat, Redeye, and Jailbreak

These are among the most powerful sedans ever sold. They carry high purchase prices, high repair costs, and, according to HLDI, theft claim frequencies more than 60 times the average for 2020 to 2022 models. Some insurers limit how they write these cars or require a clean driving record and secure parking.

Electric Daytona and 2026 SIXPACK

The Daytona EV adds battery-related repair considerations, while the SIXPACK models use a new twin-turbo six-cylinder. Because both are recent, insurers have less claim data and rely partly on similar vehicles. Expect the higher-output Scat Pack versions of each to cost more than the R/T.

Theft risk and how to reduce it

The Charger's theft problem centered on V8 models, especially the Hellcat, which were targeted with key programming tools and other methods. In the Highway Loss Data Institute's 2023 report on 2020 to 2022 models, the Charger SRT Hellcat's theft claim rate rose to about 25 claims per 1,000 insured vehicles.

If you own a V8 Charger, these steps help protect the car and may help with insurance:

  • Park in a locked garage whenever possible.
  • Use a steering wheel lock and consider an aftermarket immobilizer or tracking device.
  • Check with a Dodge dealer for any security updates available for your model year.
  • Keep key fobs away from doors and windows, and consider a signal-blocking pouch.
  • Ask each insurer which anti-theft devices earn a discount.
  • Keep comprehensive coverage. On a high-value Charger, dropping it to save money can be a costly mistake.

Who pays the most for Charger insurance

The driver often matters as much as the trim. Combinations insurers price highest include:

  • Young drivers in V8 or supercharged trims. A driver under 25 in a Scat Pack or Hellcat usually faces very high premiums, and some insurers may decline to write the policy.
  • Drivers with speeding tickets or at-fault crashes. Violations combined with a high-horsepower car compound the risk.
  • Cars garaged in high-theft areas. Comprehensive costs rise where V8 Chargers are frequently stolen.

For a young driver, a V6 SXT or GT is usually the most realistic Charger to insure. Our guide to insurance for a new driver has more on managing costs for first-time drivers, and our page on Ford Mustang car insurance explains how insurers treat another popular performance car.

Coverage to consider for a Charger

  • Comprehensive with an affordable deductible, especially on V8 and Hellcat models.
  • Collision on any Charger that is financed, leased, or valuable. Our comprehensive vs. collision coverage guide explains the difference.
  • Higher liability limits and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at matching limits.
  • Custom parts and equipment coverage for aftermarket wheels, exhausts, tuners, and body kits. Disclose performance modifications.
  • Gap coverage on a new Charger financed with little down, including the Daytona EV and SIXPACK.
  • Agreed or stated value from specialty insurers for limited-production or collectible Chargers. Eligibility usually depends on limited use and secure storage.

Ways to save on Charger insurance

  1. Choose the trim carefully. A V6 Charger usually costs far less to insure than a V8 or Hellcat.
  2. Compare several insurers. Companies weigh horsepower and theft risk very differently.
  3. Use anti-theft protection and ask about discounts.
  4. Garage the car and report the garaging accurately.
  5. Keep a clean record. Violations raise performance-car premiums more sharply than average.
  6. Bundle home or renters insurance with your auto policy.
  7. Consider limited-mileage options if the Charger is a weekend car, including telematics or low-mileage discounts.
  8. Review coverage as the car ages. An older V6 Charger may reach the point where liability-only coverage makes sense, while a V8 often keeps enough value to justify physical damage coverage longer.

Buying a used Charger: insurance checks before you buy

Because Chargers were sold in so many configurations for so long, used shoppers should confirm a few things before they commit. First, verify the trim and engine with the VIN rather than badges, since badges can be changed. Second, ask for quotes on that VIN before buying, especially for a Scat Pack or Hellcat, to make sure an insurer will write it at a price you can accept. Third, check NHTSA's recall lookup and the vehicle history report for prior theft recovery, flood damage, or salvage titles, which can affect both coverage and value. Finally, budget for anti-theft equipment on V8 models.

What you need for a Charger insurance quote

Charger quotes depend heavily on the exact version, so have these ready.

  1. VIN, model year, and trim. This confirms V6, V8, supercharged, electric, or SIXPACK.
  2. Anti-theft details. Garage parking, steering wheel lock, immobilizer, or tracker.
  3. Modifications. Any wheels, exhaust, tuning, or body changes and their cost.
  4. Drivers and history. Dates of birth, license numbers, and recent accidents or violations.
  5. Current declarations page. To match your existing coverage.

Dodge Charger insurance FAQs

Which Dodge Charger is cheapest to insure?

Usually a V6 model such as the SE, SXT, or GT. V8, supercharged, and newer high-output trims typically cost more.

Why is the Charger Hellcat so expensive to insure?

It has a high price, very high power, costly repairs, and, according to HLDI, a theft claim rate more than 60 times the average for 2020 to 2022 models.

Is the electric Charger Daytona expensive to insure?

It may cost more than a V6 Charger because of its price and battery repair costs. Insurers have limited claim data, so compare several quotes.

How are 2026 SIXPACK Chargers rated?

As new models with a twin-turbo six-cylinder. The 550-horsepower Scat Pack will usually cost more than the 420-horsepower R/T.

Can a young driver insure a Scat Pack or Hellcat?

Some insurers will, at high premiums, and some may decline. A V6 Charger is usually far more realistic.

Do anti-theft devices lower Charger insurance?

Some insurers offer discounts for approved devices, and they can reduce theft risk. Ask each insurer what it recognizes.

Should I get agreed value coverage for my Charger?

For limited-production or collectible Chargers driven sparingly, agreed value from a specialty insurer can make sense. Standard policies pay actual cash value.

Is the all-wheel-drive Charger GT more expensive to insure than the SXT?

It can cost slightly more because of its higher price and sportier equipment, but it keeps the V6 engine, so it is usually far less expensive to insure than V8 trims.
