Pennsylvania HVAC Contractor Insurance: HICPA, Local Licenses, and Workers’ Comp

Illustration of an HVAC condenser, ductwork, and thermostat for Pennsylvania HVAC contractor insurance

Pennsylvania has no statewide HVAC license. Contractors doing $5,000 or more of home improvement work a year must register under HICPA and carry $50,000 of personal injury and $50,000 of property damage liability. Cities such as Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Reading license HVAC trades locally, and employers with even one employee must carry workers’ compensation.

This guide covers Pennsylvania HVAC licensing, required coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Pennsylvania, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your HVAC business.

Pennsylvania workers’ compensation

Pennsylvania employers with at least one employee must carry workers’ compensation, including part-time workers and family members, unless every worker falls in an excluded group such as sole proprietors or approved executive officers (Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry).

Coverage most Pennsylvania HVAC contractors carry

  • General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a condensate leak that ruins a customer’s ceiling or a furnace install that starts a fire.
  • Business owner’s policy: general liability bundled with property coverage for your shop, parts, and equipment stock.
  • Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if an employee is hurt, including falls from roofs and attics, burns, and lifting injuries.
  • Commercial auto: service vans and trucks that carry technicians, units, and refrigerant.
  • Tools and equipment (inland marine): gauges, recovery machines, vacuum pumps, and brazing kits on job sites or in transit.
  • Commercial umbrella: extra limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
