Illustration of an electrical panel, conduit, and outlets for nebraska electrical contractor insurance

Nebraska’s State Electrical Division licenses electrical contractors and journeyman electricians statewide. Licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years and require 12 hours of continuing education. The state sets no license bond, and contractors also register with the Nebraska Department of Labor, filing workers’ comp proof if they have employees.

This guide covers Nebraska electrical licensing, NDOL registration, workers’ comp, coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Nebraska, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your electrical business.

Nebraska electrical licensing

  • The State Electrical Division licenses Electrical Contractors and Journeyman Electricians, plus residential, fire alarm, and special licenses (Contractor License Requirements (Nebraska electrician guide)).
  • Journeyman applicants need four years of electrical experience, and licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years. The contractor license fee is $375.
  • Licensees complete 12 approved hours of continuing education, at least six on the National Electrical Code.
  • No state license bond applies, and the state publishes no statewide liability amount.

Nebraska workers’ compensation

Contractors with one or more employees must give NDOL a current workers’ compensation certificate as part of contractor registration (Contractor License Requirements (Nebraska electrician guide)).

Coverage most Nebraska electricians carry

  • General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a wiring fault that starts a fire in a customer’s home.
  • Business owner’s policy: general liability bundled with property coverage for your shop, wire, and stock.
  • Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if an employee is hurt, including shocks and falls.
  • Commercial auto: service vans and bucket trucks that carry crews and equipment.
  • Tools and equipment (inland marine): meters, benders, lifts, and power tools on job sites or in transit.
  • Commercial umbrella: extra limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
