Washington Roofing Contractor Insurance: L&I Registration, Bond, and Coverage
Washington roofers register with the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) as specialty contractors. Registration requires a $15,000 continuous bond and general liability of $200,000 public liability plus $50,000 property damage, or $250,000 combined. Washington is a monopolistic state, so employers buy workers’ comp from L&I.
This guide covers Washington roofing registration, bond and insurance minimums, L&I workers’ comp, coverage, and typical costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency licensed in Washington, and a licensed agent can compare quotes for your roofing business.

Washington workers’ compensation
Washington is a monopolistic state. Businesses with one or more employees, full-time or part-time, must buy workers’ compensation from L&I. The state fund does not include employer’s liability, so many roofers add a stop-gap endorsement to their general liability policy (Insureon (monopolistic states)).
Coverage most Washington roofers carry
- General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a dropped bundle that damages a car or a leak that ruins a homeowner’s ceiling.
- Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if a crew member is hurt, including falls.
- Commercial auto: trucks and trailers used to haul crews, materials, and debris.
- Tools and equipment (inland marine): ladders, nail guns, and compressors on job sites or in transit.
- Commercial umbrella: extra liability limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
