Georgia roofing license rules

The Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors lists flat roofing, sheet metal roofing, and shingles and shakes as traditional specialty trades. Specialty contractors do not need a residential or general contractor license when working within their specialty, but must follow all state and local codes and ordinances. The list is subject to change (Georgia Secretary of State).

Georgia workers’ compensation

Employers who regularly employ three or more people in Georgia must carry workers’ compensation. Regular part-time workers count, and officers of corporations and members of LLCs are included in the headcount (Georgia State Board of Workers’ Compensation).

Coverage most Georgia roofers carry

  • General liability: third-party injuries and property damage, such as a dropped bundle that damages a car or a leak that ruins a homeowner’s ceiling.
  • Workers’ compensation: medical bills and lost wages if a crew member is hurt, including falls.
  • Commercial auto: trucks and trailers used to haul crews, materials, and debris.
  • Tools and equipment (inland marine): ladders, nail guns, and compressors on job sites or in transit.
  • Commercial umbrella: extra liability limits on top of general liability and auto, often required on commercial jobs.
