Ram 1500 Car Insurance: Costs, Coverage, and Savings

Insurance company logos in this graphic are shown for identification only and do not mean Blake Insurance Group represents or is endorsed by each company.

Ram 1500 car insurance depends heavily on which Ram 1500 you drive. A work-trim Tradesman and a luxury Limited are both Ram 1500s, but they differ in value, equipment, and repair cost, and insurers price them accordingly. How you use the truck, including towing and work, matters just as much.

This guide explains what drives the cost of insuring a Ram 1500, the coverage a pickup owner should consider, how towing and tools are handled, and ways to save. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many drivers.

What drives the cost of insuring a Ram 1500

Insurers price a Ram 1500 from two sets of facts: the vehicle itself and the people who drive it. For the Ram 1500, the vehicle-related factors that matter most are:

  • Trim and value. Luxury trims with leather, large screens, and air suspension cost far more to replace than work trims
  • Engine. High-output engines and performance models can raise collision and liability pricing with some insurers
  • Size and weight. A heavy pickup can cause more damage to other vehicles, which affects liability rating
  • Accessories. Lift kits, wheels, bed covers, and toolboxes add value that standard coverage may not fully include

Driver facts usually carry more weight than the vehicle: the ages and records of everyone in the household, past claims, the ZIP code where the Ram 1500 is parked, annual mileage, a credit-based insurance score where state law allows it, and the limits and deductibles you choose. For context, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported an average auto insurance expenditure of $1,281.60 nationwide in 2023. Individual premiums land far above and below that figure, so treat it as background rather than a benchmark for your own quote.

Because every insurer weighs these facts differently, two companies can quote the same Ram 1500 and the same driver hundreds of dollars apart. Our car insurance calculator shows how coverage choices move a premium, and our guide to car insurance quotes explains how to keep comparisons fair.

Ram 1500 trims and what they mean for insurance

Ram 1500 trim groups and insurance considerations
Trim groupExamplesInsurance considerations
Work trimsTradesman, Big Horn, Lone StarLowest value; usually the least expensive Ram 1500 to insure
Off-road trimsRebel, WarlockOff-road equipment and larger tires; ask about custom equipment
Luxury trimsLaramie, Limited, Longhorn, TungstenHigh replacement cost, premium materials, and more sensors
Performance modelsTRX and other high-output versions, where offeredVery high value and power; some insurers rate them like performance vehicles

Trim names and engine availability change by model year. Insurers rate the exact VIN.

The Ram lineup has changed engines in recent years, including a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six introduced for 2025. Make sure your quote uses the VIN so the insurer sees the correct engine and equipment.

Work, towing, and business use

A Ram 1500 often does double duty as a family vehicle and a work truck. Insurers want to know how it is used:

  • Personal use with occasional hauling, such as moving furniture or towing a camper, is normal personal use.
  • Driving to job sites with your own tools may still fit a personal policy with some insurers, but tell your agent.
  • Business ownership or regular business use, such as a contractor's truck titled to an LLC or hauling for pay, usually requires a commercial auto policy.
  • Towing for others or hauling goods for pay typically requires commercial coverage and may require federal or state filings.

Misstating how the truck is used can lead to a denied claim. If you are unsure which policy fits, an independent agent can quote both.

Towing a trailer, camper, or boat

Many Ram 1500 owners tow. Your auto liability coverage generally follows an attached trailer, so if your trailer causes damage to someone else, your policy usually responds. Damage to the trailer itself is different:

  • A utility or cargo trailer can often be added to the auto policy for physical damage coverage.
  • Campers and travel trailers usually need an RV or travel trailer policy, which can include contents and vacation liability.
  • Boats and boat trailers are typically covered under a boat policy.

Make sure your hitch, brake controller, and safety chains are set up correctly. A crash caused by an improperly loaded trailer can still lead to a liability claim against you.

Coverage to consider for a Ram 1500

  • Liability well above the state minimum. A full-size pickup is heavy, and a crash with a smaller car can cause serious injuries. Many truck owners choose 100/300/100 or higher and add an umbrella policy.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at limits that match your liability. See UM and UIM coverage.
  • Collision and comprehensive on any Ram 1500 that is financed, leased, or worth more than you could comfortably replace.
  • Custom parts and equipment coverage. Lift kits, aftermarket wheels, bed covers, light bars, and permanently installed toolboxes are often covered only up to a small limit unless you list them.
  • Trailers. Liability usually extends to a trailer while it is attached, but damage to the trailer itself, and to a camper or boat on it, generally needs separate coverage.
  • Rental reimbursement with a daily limit high enough to rent a pickup, which often costs more than a sedan.

Tools and equipment carried in the bed or cab are generally not covered by a personal auto policy. Personal tools may fall under a homeowners or renters policy away from home, subject to its deductible. Business tools usually need a commercial inland marine or business policy.

Repairs, parts, and claims on a Ram 1500

Repair costs drive the collision and comprehensive part of your premium, and they decide how smooth a claim feels. A few points apply to almost every modern Ram 1500:

  • Sensor calibration. Cameras and radar used by driver-assistance features often sit behind the windshield, in the grille, or in the bumpers. After a windshield replacement or a minor bumper repair, those systems may need calibration, which adds cost. Ask whether your glass coverage includes it.
  • Parts. Policies differ on whether repairs use new factory parts, aftermarket parts, or recycled parts. Read the parts language in your policy, and ask about an OEM parts endorsement if it matters to you.
  • Choice of shop. In most states you can choose your repair shop. An insurer's preferred shop may offer a repair guarantee, but you are generally not required to use it.
  • Supplements. Hidden damage is often found after a bumper or panel comes off. Shops send a supplement to the insurer, which can extend the repair time and the rental you need.

If you are unsure whether to file a small claim, compare the repair estimate with your deductible and ask your agent how a claim might affect renewal. See comprehensive vs. collision coverage for which coverage pays for which kind of damage.

Financed, leased, or paid off: matching coverage to how you own it

Financed or leased

Lenders and leasing companies require collision and comprehensive, often with a maximum deductible such as $500 or $1,000, and they must be listed on the policy as loss payee or additional insured. Leases often require higher liability limits as well. Check the contract before you shop so every quote meets it.

Gap and new car replacement

A new Ram 1500 can be worth less than the loan balance for the first few years. Gap coverage pays the difference after a total loss, minus your deductible. Some insurers also offer new car replacement, which pays to replace a recent-model car with a new one of the same make and model. Compare the insurer's price with the gap product offered at the dealership.

Paid off

Once the loan is paid off, you choose the coverage. Many owners keep collision and comprehensive on a Ram 1500 of this age and value, but raise the deductible to lower the premium. Revisit the decision every year or two as the vehicle ages.

Ways to save on Ram 1500 insurance

  1. Ask for quotes on the exact cab, bed, engine, and trim, since a work-trim pickup and a luxury trim can price very differently.
  2. Report work use accurately. If you use the truck for a business, a commercial policy may be required, but occasional personal hauling is normal personal use.
  3. Bundle with home or renters insurance, and insure every household vehicle together for a multi-car discount.
  4. Choose deductibles you could pay tomorrow; higher deductibles lower premiums.
  5. Ask about anti-theft and tracking devices, safe driver, paid-in-full, paperless, and autopay discounts.
  6. Consider a telematics program if you drive carefully and do not mind sharing driving data.

Avoid saving money by dropping liability limits to the minimum or leaving off household drivers. Both can leave you exposed after a serious crash, and an undisclosed driver can complicate a claim. See our list of car insurance discounts for more ideas.

What you need for a Ram 1500 insurance quote

These details help insurers rate the right Ram 1500 and match your coverage.

  1. VIN, model year, and trim. This tells the insurer the exact Ram 1500, including engine, drivetrain, and equipment.
  2. Every household driver. Names, dates of birth, license numbers, and driving history for anyone who lives with you and drives.
  3. Current declarations page. So new quotes match your limits, deductibles, and optional coverages.
  4. How you use the vehicle. Whether you tow, haul for work, carry tools, or use the truck for a business, plus commuting distance and annual mileage.
  5. Loan or lease details. The lienholder's name and any coverage or deductible requirements in the contract.

Ram 1500 insurance FAQs

Is a Ram 1500 expensive to insure?

It depends on trim, engine, drivers, and location. Work trims are generally less expensive to insure than luxury or performance versions.

Does a Crew Cab cost more to insure than a Quad Cab?

It can, mainly because it usually costs more to buy. Compare quotes on the exact configuration.

Is the Ram TRX more expensive to insure?

Usually, because of its high value and power. Some insurers rate it more like a performance vehicle.

Does my policy cover tools in my Ram 1500?

Generally no. Personal auto policies cover the vehicle and permanently installed equipment, not loose tools. Personal tools may fall under homeowners or renters coverage; business tools usually need a commercial policy.

Is my trailer covered when I tow it with my Ram 1500?

Liability usually extends to an attached trailer, but damage to the trailer and its contents typically needs separate coverage.

Do I need commercial insurance for my Ram 1500?

If the truck is used mainly for a business, titled to a business, or carries paying loads, you may need a commercial policy. Occasional personal hauling is normal personal use.

Are lift kits and aftermarket wheels covered?

Usually only up to a small limit unless you add custom parts and equipment coverage and list the items.
