Mazda CX-5 Car Insurance: Costs, Coverage, and Savings
Mazda CX-5 car insurance is generally priced in the mainstream of the compact SUV class. Insurers look most closely at the engine, since turbocharged CX-5s cost more and accelerate faster, and at the upscale trims that bring premium materials and more sensors into the repair bill.
This guide covers how CX-5 versions compare for insurance, what safety technology means for premiums and repairs, coverage for families, and ways to save. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many drivers.

What drives the cost of insuring a Mazda CX-5
Insurers price a Mazda CX-5 from two sets of facts: the vehicle itself and the people who drive it. For the CX-5, the vehicle-related factors that matter most are:
- Engine. Turbo models cost more to buy and have more power, which can raise pricing slightly
- Trim. Signature and Turbo trims add premium materials and larger wheels
- Sensors. Radar and cameras for driver assistance raise repair costs after minor damage
- Popularity. The CX-5 sells in large numbers, so parts are widely available
Driver facts usually carry more weight than the vehicle: the ages and records of everyone in the household, past claims, the ZIP code where the CX-5 is parked, annual mileage, a credit-based insurance score where state law allows it, and the limits and deductibles you choose. For context, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported an average auto insurance expenditure of $1,281.60 nationwide in 2023. Individual premiums land far above and below that figure, so treat it as background rather than a benchmark for your own quote.
Because every insurer weighs these facts differently, two companies can quote the same CX-5 and the same driver hundreds of dollars apart. Our car insurance calculator shows how coverage choices move a premium, and our guide to car insurance quotes explains how to keep comparisons fair.
CX-5 versions and insurance
| Version | Engine | Insurance considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Core trims (such as S and Select) | 2.5-liter four-cylinder | Lowest value; usually the least expensive CX-5 to insure |
| Mid trims (such as Preferred and Premium) | 2.5-liter four-cylinder | More equipment and larger wheels |
| Turbo trims (such as Turbo and Signature) | 2.5-liter turbo | Higher value and performance; can be rated somewhat higher |
Trim names vary by model year. Insurers rate the exact VIN.
For a household adding a young driver, a non-turbo CX-5 is usually the better choice for insurance cost.
Safety technology, premiums, and repairs
The CX-5 includes features such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assistance on recent models. These features can help prevent some crashes, and some insurers offer discounts for them. But the radar units and cameras that make them work sit in places that are easily damaged, such as the bumper, grille, and windshield, and they must be recalibrated after many repairs.
The net effect on your premium depends on each insurer's claims experience. Ask whether a safety-feature discount applies, and check that your glass coverage includes calibration after a windshield replacement.
Before buying any used CX-5, check crash-test ratings for that model year from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and NHTSA, and check NHTSA's recall lookup with the VIN.
All-wheel drive and weather claims
Recent U.S. CX-5s come with all-wheel drive, which helps with traction in rain and snow. It does not shorten stopping distances, and it does not prevent the most common weather claims:
- Sliding into another vehicle on ice is a collision claim.
- Hail, falling branches, and flooding are comprehensive claims.
- A deer strike is usually a comprehensive claim.
If you live where hail or deer are common, consider a lower comprehensive deductible. Comparing compact SUVs? See Honda CR-V car insurance and Toyota RAV4 car insurance.
Coverage to consider for a Mazda CX-5
- Liability well above the state minimum. A family SUV often carries several passengers, and a crash can involve multiple injured people. Many households choose 100/300/100 or higher.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at matching limits, which protects everyone riding in your CX-5. See UM and UIM coverage.
- Collision and comprehensive on any CX-5 that is financed, leased, or that you could not easily replace.
- Rental reimbursement with a daily limit that covers an SUV, not just a compact car.
- Roadside assistance if you do not have it through an auto club or the manufacturer.
- Child safety seats. Some insurers pay to replace car seats that were in the vehicle during a crash. Ask how your insurer handles them.
If you use the CX-5 for paid deliveries, rideshare, or regular business errands, tell your agent. Personal policies commonly exclude those uses unless you add the right endorsement.
Repairs, parts, and claims on a CX-5
Repair costs drive the collision and comprehensive part of your premium, and they decide how smooth a claim feels. A few points apply to almost every modern CX-5:
- Sensor calibration. Cameras and radar used by driver-assistance features often sit behind the windshield, in the grille, or in the bumpers. After a windshield replacement or a minor bumper repair, those systems may need calibration, which adds cost. Ask whether your glass coverage includes it.
- Parts. Policies differ on whether repairs use new factory parts, aftermarket parts, or recycled parts. Read the parts language in your policy, and ask about an OEM parts endorsement if it matters to you.
- Choice of shop. In most states you can choose your repair shop. An insurer's preferred shop may offer a repair guarantee, but you are generally not required to use it.
- Supplements. Hidden damage is often found after a bumper or panel comes off. Shops send a supplement to the insurer, which can extend the repair time and the rental you need.
If you are unsure whether to file a small claim, compare the repair estimate with your deductible and ask your agent how a claim might affect renewal. See comprehensive vs. collision coverage for which coverage pays for which kind of damage.
Financed, leased, or paid off: matching coverage to how you own it
Financed or leased
Lenders and leasing companies require collision and comprehensive, often with a maximum deductible such as $500 or $1,000, and they must be listed on the policy as loss payee or additional insured. Leases often require higher liability limits as well. Check the contract before you shop so every quote meets it.
Gap and new car replacement
A new CX-5 can be worth less than the loan balance for the first few years. Gap coverage pays the difference after a total loss, minus your deductible. Some insurers also offer new car replacement, which pays to replace a recent-model car with a new one of the same make and model. Compare the insurer's price with the gap product offered at the dealership.
Paid off
Once the loan is paid off, you choose the coverage. Many owners keep collision and comprehensive on a CX-5 of this age and value, but raise the deductible to lower the premium. Revisit the decision every year or two as the vehicle ages.
Ways to save on Mazda CX-5 insurance
- Compare at least three insurers with identical limits and deductibles.
- Bundle home and auto, and insure every household vehicle on one policy.
- Ask about discounts for safety features, anti-theft devices, good students, and driver training courses.
- Raise deductibles to an amount you could comfortably pay.
- Pay in full or set up autopay and paperless billing if your insurer offers discounts for them.
- Consider a telematics program if your household drives carefully.
Avoid saving money by dropping liability limits to the minimum or leaving off household drivers. Both can leave you exposed after a serious crash, and an undisclosed driver can complicate a claim. See our list of car insurance discounts for more ideas.
What you need for a CX-5 insurance quote
These details help insurers rate the right CX-5 and match your coverage.
- VIN, model year, and trim. This tells the insurer the exact CX-5, including engine, drivetrain, and equipment.
- Every household driver. Names, dates of birth, license numbers, and driving history for anyone who lives with you and drives.
- Current declarations page. So new quotes match your limits, deductibles, and optional coverages.
- How you use the vehicle. Commuting distance, annual mileage, and any business, delivery, or rideshare use.
- Loan or lease details. The lienholder's name and any coverage or deductible requirements in the contract.
