Kia Optima Car Insurance: Theft Risk, Costs, and Coverage
Kia Optima car insurance is shaped by one issue above all: theft. Many key-ignition Optimas lack an engine immobilizer, and the Optima ranked sixth on the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the most stolen vehicles of 2025. That affects comprehensive pricing, and some insurers have restricted coverage for affected models.
This guide explains the Optima's theft problem, the free software upgrade and other fixes, how to keep comprehensive coverage, and ways to save. Kia replaced the Optima with the K5 after the 2020 model year, so every Optima is now a used car. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many drivers.

What drives the cost of insuring a Kia Optima
Insurers price a Kia Optima from two sets of facts: the vehicle itself and the people who drive it. For the Optima, the vehicle-related factors that matter most are:
- Theft risk. A very high theft rate for key-ignition models can raise the cost of comprehensive coverage
- Ignition type. Push-button-start models generally have an immobilizer; key-ignition models often do not
- Age and value. Older Optimas cost less to replace, so collision and comprehensive cost less but also pay less
- Insurer rules. Some insurers have required anti-theft upgrades or limited new policies for affected models in some areas
Driver facts usually carry more weight than the vehicle: the ages and records of everyone in the household, past claims, the ZIP code where the Optima is parked, annual mileage, a credit-based insurance score where state law allows it, and the limits and deductibles you choose. For context, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported an average auto insurance expenditure of $1,281.60 nationwide in 2023. Individual premiums land far above and below that figure, so treat it as background rather than a benchmark for your own quote.
Because every insurer weighs these facts differently, two companies can quote the same Optima and the same driver hundreds of dollars apart. Our car insurance calculator shows how coverage choices move a premium, and our guide to car insurance quotes explains how to keep comparisons fair.
The Optima theft problem
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the most stolen vehicles of 2025, as reported by AAA Club Alliance in August 2026, the Kia Optima ranked sixth nationally with 11,521 thefts, down 34% from the prior year. Hyundai and Kia models held several spots on the list. Hyundai and Kia have said that many of their 2011 to 2022 models with a traditional key ignition, rather than push-button start, lack an engine immobilizer, which made them easier to steal after methods spread on social media.
The Optima's high theft rate matters for insurance in three ways:
- Comprehensive coverage is essential. Theft and the damage thieves cause, such as broken windows and steering columns, are covered only under comprehensive.
- Pricing. Insurers that pay many theft claims on a model raise the comprehensive rate for it.
- Availability. Some insurers have declined to write new policies on affected models in certain cities, or required proof of the software upgrade or a steering wheel lock.
Software upgrade and other fixes
Kia offers a free anti-theft software upgrade for eligible Optimas from the 2011 to 2020 model years. The upgrade changes the security system so the car will not start unless it has been unlocked with the key fob, and it extends the alarm. A window sticker shows the car has been updated.
- Check eligibility and schedule the upgrade with a Kia dealer.
- Keep proof of the upgrade; some insurers ask for it.
- For cars that are not eligible, Kia has offered steering wheel locks, and a class-action settlement offered reimbursement for some anti-theft devices.
- Consider a tracking device, which may also qualify for a discount.
After the upgrade, tell your insurer. It may not lower your rate immediately, but it can help you keep or obtain comprehensive coverage.
Optima vs. K5
Kia replaced the Optima with the K5 starting with the 2021 model year. Many K5s use push-button start, but some K5 models were also included in Kia's software upgrade program. If you are choosing between a late Optima and an early K5, ask the dealer whether the specific car has an immobilizer or needs the upgrade, and get quotes on both VINs.

Coverage to consider for a Kia Optima
- Liability above the state minimum. Minimum limits are a legal floor and can be exhausted quickly by one serious injury claim. Many drivers choose 100/300/100.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at matching limits. See UM and UIM coverage.
- Collision and comprehensive while the Optima is financed or leased, and for as long as its value justifies the cost.
- Gap coverage if you owe more on the loan than the car is worth, which is common in the first years of a long loan.
- Rental reimbursement so a repair does not leave you without a way to get to work.
- Glass coverage terms, including whether windshield replacement and camera calibration are covered and what deductible applies.
If you drive for a rideshare or delivery app in your Optima, a personal policy alone usually leaves gaps while the app is on. Our rideshare insurance guide explains the options.
Repairs, parts, and claims on a Optima
Repair costs drive the collision and comprehensive part of your premium, and they decide how smooth a claim feels. A few points apply to almost every modern Optima:
- Sensor calibration. Cameras and radar used by driver-assistance features often sit behind the windshield, in the grille, or in the bumpers. After a windshield replacement or a minor bumper repair, those systems may need calibration, which adds cost. Ask whether your glass coverage includes it.
- Parts. Policies differ on whether repairs use new factory parts, aftermarket parts, or recycled parts. Read the parts language in your policy, and ask about an OEM parts endorsement if it matters to you.
- Choice of shop. In most states you can choose your repair shop. An insurer's preferred shop may offer a repair guarantee, but you are generally not required to use it.
- Supplements. Hidden damage is often found after a bumper or panel comes off. Shops send a supplement to the insurer, which can extend the repair time and the rental you need.
If you are unsure whether to file a small claim, compare the repair estimate with your deductible and ask your agent how a claim might affect renewal. See comprehensive vs. collision coverage for which coverage pays for which kind of damage.
Financed, leased, or paid off: matching coverage to how you own it
Buying a used Optima
Before you buy, run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and review a vehicle history report for prior accidents, flood damage, or a salvage or rebuilt title. A rebuilt title can make it harder to buy collision and comprehensive coverage and lowers what an insurer pays after a total loss. Get quotes on the exact VIN before you sign.
Financed
If you finance a used Optima, the lender will require collision and comprehensive and set a maximum deductible. Gap coverage can still matter on a used car if the loan is long or the down payment was small.
Paid off and aging
As the Optima ages, compare the yearly cost of collision and comprehensive with the car's market value. Many drivers raise deductibles first, then drop collision when the math no longer works, while keeping comprehensive where theft, hail, or flooding are common. Our deductible calculator can help with the trade-off.
Ways to save on Kia Optima insurance
- Compare at least three insurers with identical limits and deductibles; sedans are popular, so insurers compete hard for them.
- Ask about good student, driver training, and distant student discounts if a young driver uses the car.
- Bundle with home or renters insurance, and combine household vehicles on one policy.
- Raise deductibles to an amount you could pay tomorrow.
- Consider pay-per-mile or telematics coverage if you drive less than average or drive carefully.
- Ask about anti-theft devices, paid-in-full, paperless, and autopay discounts.
Avoid saving money by dropping liability limits to the minimum or leaving off household drivers. Both can leave you exposed after a serious crash, and an undisclosed driver can complicate a claim. See our list of car insurance discounts for more ideas.
What you need for a Optima insurance quote
These details help insurers rate the right Optima and match your coverage.
- VIN, model year, and trim. This tells the insurer the exact Optima, including engine, drivetrain, and equipment.
- Every household driver. Names, dates of birth, license numbers, and driving history for anyone who lives with you and drives.
- Current declarations page. So new quotes match your limits, deductibles, and optional coverages.
- How you use the vehicle. Commuting distance, annual mileage, and any business, delivery, or rideshare use.
- Loan or lease details. The lienholder's name and any coverage or deductible requirements in the contract.
Kia Optima insurance FAQs
Why is the Kia Optima stolen so often?
Many key-ignition Optimas lack an engine immobilizer, which made them easier to steal after methods spread online.
Can I get insurance on a Kia Optima?
Yes. Most insurers cover it, though some have restricted new policies in certain areas or required anti-theft measures. An independent agent can compare insurers.
Does the software upgrade lower my premium?
Not always right away, but it can help you keep comprehensive coverage and may matter to some insurers.
Is the Optima cheap to insure?
It is often reasonably priced, but there is no single rate. Your age, record, ZIP code, coverage, and trim usually matter more than the model.
Should I keep full coverage on my Optima?
Keep collision and comprehensive while the car is financed or leased, and as long as its value justifies the cost.
Does a young driver change the price much?
Yes. Young drivers usually pay the most for any vehicle. Good student, driver training, and telematics discounts can help.
Can I use my Optima for rideshare or delivery?
Only with the right coverage. Personal policies often exclude app-based driving unless you add an endorsement or the app's coverage applies.
