How to Find Low-Cost Auto Insurance in Michigan

How to find low-cost auto insurance in Michigan

Finding low-cost auto insurance in Michigan starts with knowing what the state requires, then lowering your premium without giving up protection you will need after a serious accident. Michigan requires at least residual liability of 50/100/10 if you sign a form selecting it (the default is 250/500/10), plus personal injury protection and $1 million property protection insurance. The cheapest policy is not always the best value, so compare prices for the same coverage.

This guide covers Michigan's requirements, coverage you should think twice about cutting, discounts, and how to compare quotes. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency; a licensed agent can compare options available to us in Michigan.

Tell us about your drivers and vehicles, and a licensed agent will follow up with options available to us. Submitting the form does not bind coverage.

If the form does not load, call 888-387-3687, Monday through Friday, 9:00 to 5:00, or email info@blakeinsurancegroup.com.

Michigan's no-fault system requires PIP, PPI, and residual liability. Your choice of PIP medical level is one of the biggest levers on price.

Ways to lower your Michigan premium

  • Compare at least three quotes with identical coverage every year or two, and whenever your premium jumps at renewal.
  • Raise collision and comprehensive deductibles to an amount you could pay tomorrow without strain.
  • Drop collision and comprehensive on an older car only when the car's value is low enough that you could replace it yourself.
  • Ask about every discount: multi-policy, multi-vehicle, good student, defensive driving, paperless, paid-in-full, and safety equipment.
  • Try a driving-data program if you drive carefully and are comfortable sharing driving data. See usage-based insurance.
  • Keep continuous coverage. Even a short lapse can raise future rates.
  • Report accurate mileage. Lower annual mileage can mean a lower premium.
  • Bundle auto with renters or homeowners insurance where the combined price is lower.

Coverage you should think twice about cutting

Some coverage cuts save very little and expose you to large losses. Be cautious about:

  • Buying only the state minimum liability. Minimum limits can be exhausted by a single serious injury, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.
  • Rejecting uninsured motorist coverage. It protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. See uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
  • Dropping collision on a financed car. Lenders and lessors usually require it.
  • Letting the policy lapse between vehicles or during a move.

What makes Michigan different

Michigan's 2019 auto insurance reform lets drivers choose their PIP medical coverage level. Lower PIP options cost less, and the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) fee is lower for drivers who do not choose unlimited PIP: $19 per vehicle versus $84 for unlimited PIP for policies from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. The $250,000 with exclusions, $50,000 Medicaid, and opt-out options require qualifying health coverage, Medicaid, or Medicare. Before lowering PIP, check whether your health plan covers auto injuries and how it coordinates with auto insurance.

Michigan also limits non-driving rating factors: insurers cannot use credit information to set rates. For collision coverage, Michigan offers broad, standard, and limited options, which pay differently depending on fault; choosing limited collision lowers cost but pays only when you are not substantially at fault. Our Michigan auto insurance guide explains these choices in more detail.

How to compare quotes the right way

Price differences only mean something when coverage matches. Line up these coverages on every quote.

Coverage terms to match on each and other quotes

Bodily injury liabilityInjuries you cause to othersPer-person and per-accident limits, such as 100/300
Property damage liabilityDamage you cause to others' propertySame limit on both quotes, such as $100,000
Uninsured/underinsured motoristYour injuries when the at-fault driver lacks enough coverageSame limits; ideally equal to your liability limits

If you are considered high risk

If several insurers decline you because of violations, accidents, a lapse, or a DUI, you still have options. Many insurers specialize in higher-risk drivers, and every state has a residual market plan for drivers who cannot find coverage in the voluntary market. Prices are higher, but keeping coverage continuous and your record clean will usually bring rates down over three to five years. If a court or the motor vehicle agency requires an SR-22 or similar filing, see our SR-22 insurance and high-risk auto insurance pages.

When an agent may help

Online tools work well for simple situations. A conversation with a licensed agent may be more useful when:

  • You have a teen driver, several vehicles, or drivers with recent accidents or violations.
  • You need an SR-22 or other state filing. See our SR-22 insurance page.
  • You use a vehicle for rideshare, delivery, or other business purposes.
  • You own a home, rental property, or significant savings and want liability limits that work with an umbrella policy.
  • You have had a claim denied or a policy nonrenewed and need help understanding your options.

An agent can also explain differences in policy wording that are hard to see on a results page.

Switching insurers without a gap

If a new quote is lower, switch carefully so you are never uninsured:

  1. Confirm the final price after the insurer verifies your information.
  2. Set the new policy to start on or before the date the old one ends.
  3. Give the new insurer your lender or lessor information if the vehicle is financed.
  4. Save your new ID cards and declarations page.
  5. Cancel the old policy effective the same day, and ask about any refund of unused premium.
  6. If you have an SR-22, confirm the new insurer files it before the old filing ends.

Three coverage levels compared

Example coverage levels for Michigan drivers
LevelLiability limitsWho it may fitTrade-off
State minimum50/100 with signed formDrivers with few assets who need the lowest legal priceLittle protection after a serious crash
Middle100/300/100Many households with savings or a homeModerately higher premium
Higher250/500/100 or moreHomeowners and drivers who want an umbrella policyHighest premium, strongest protection

Examples only, not recommendations. Add UM/UIM at matching limits where possible.

Moving from the minimum to a middle level often costs less than people expect, because liability premiums do not rise in proportion to limits. Ask for both prices before deciding.

How insurers set your price

Most insurers price a policy using your driving record, years licensed, age where allowed, the vehicle, where it is garaged, annual mileage, coverage limits, deductibles, prior insurance history, and, where state law permits, a credit-based insurance score. Each insurer weighs these factors differently, which is why quotes for the same driver can differ by hundreds of dollars. Improving the factors you control, especially your record and continuous coverage, pays off over several renewals.

Payment plans and fees

How you pay can change your total cost. Many insurers charge installment fees for monthly payments, and some offer discounts for paying the full term upfront, enrolling in automatic payments, or going paperless. If paying in full is not possible, ask which payment plan has the lowest fees. Missing a payment can cancel your policy and create a lapse, which raises future rates, so set up reminders or autopay.

What to have ready for a Michigan quote

These details help produce accurate quotes.

  1. Driver details. License numbers and dates of birth for every household driver.
  2. Vehicle VINs. And annual mileage for each vehicle.
  3. Driving history. Accidents and violations in the past three to five years.
  4. Current declarations page. To match limits and deductibles.
  5. Garaging address. Where each vehicle is kept in Michigan.

Low-cost Michigan auto insurance FAQs

What is the minimum car insurance in Michigan?

Michigan requires at least residual liability of 50/100/10 if you sign a form selecting it (the default is 250/500/10), plus personal injury protection and $1 million property protection insurance.

Is minimum coverage enough?

It satisfies the law, but a serious accident can exceed minimum limits and leave you responsible for the rest. Many drivers choose higher limits.

Does Michigan allow insurers to use credit?

No. Michigan does not allow insurers to use credit information to set auto rates or to deny, cancel, or refuse to renew coverage, though it may be considered for installment payment options.

How often should I compare quotes?

Every year or two, and whenever your premium rises significantly at renewal or your household changes.

Will a telematics program lower my rate?

It can for careful drivers. Ask whether the program can also raise your rate.

What if I cannot find coverage?

Insurers that specialize in higher-risk drivers and your state's residual market plan are options.

What is the mini-tort in Michigan?

If you are 50% or more at fault, you can be sued for up to $3,000 in damage to the other vehicle not covered by insurance.

Does lowering PIP save money?

Usually yes, and it also lowers the MCCA fee. Make sure your health coverage would cover auto injuries first.
