Best Digital Auto Insurance Companies: What Makes One Good
The best digital auto insurance companies let you quote, buy, manage, and claim almost entirely from your phone. That includes app-first insurtechs and large established insurers with strong apps. A good digital experience is fast and clear, but it should never hide coverage details or leave you without help after a serious claim.
This guide explains what to look for in a digital insurer, profiles notable app-first companies, and covers when a human agent still helps. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency and is not affiliated with the companies named. For newer companies specifically, see our startup auto insurance companies guide.

How to evaluate any digital insurer
- Who issues the policy? Some insurtechs are insurers; others are agencies placing coverage with another company.
- Financial strength. Check ratings from A.M. Best or Demotech, and remember that some newer insurers are not yet rated by A.M. Best.
- Availability. Many newer companies operate in a limited number of states.
- Claims handling. App-based claims are convenient for simple losses; ask how complex claims and injuries are handled.
- Data use. Understand what driving data is collected and how it affects your rate at renewal.
- Complaint records. Review complaint data from state regulators and the NAIC.
- Coverage gaps. Some companies do not offer gap coverage, accident forgiveness, or other options you may want.
Watch the defaults
Online quote flows often start with lower limits or omit optional coverages to show an attractive price. Before buying, review liability and uninsured motorist limits, deductibles, rental and roadside options, and who is listed as a driver. Save a copy of the coverage summary.
When a human agent still helps
Online tools work well for simple situations. A conversation with a licensed agent may be more useful when:
- You have a teen driver, several vehicles, or drivers with recent accidents or violations.
- You need an SR-22 or other state filing. See our SR-22 insurance page.
- You use a vehicle for rideshare, delivery, or other business purposes.
- You own a home, rental property, or significant savings and want liability limits that work with an umbrella policy.
- You have had a claim denied or a policy nonrenewed and need help understanding your options.
An agent can also explain differences in policy wording that are hard to see on a results page.
How to compare digital quotes
| Coverage | What it pays for | What to match |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | Injuries you cause to others | Per-person and per-accident limits, such as 100/300 |
| Property damage liability | Damage you cause to others' property | Same limit on both quotes, such as $100,000 |
| Uninsured/underinsured motorist | Your injuries when the at-fault driver lacks enough coverage | Same limits; ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Damage to your car from a crash | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Theft, fire, hail, flood, animal strikes, glass | Same deductible; note any glass option |
| Medical payments or PIP | Medical costs for you and passengers | Same limit; PIP rules depend on your state |
| Rental and roadside | Transportation during repairs; towing | Same daily and total limits |
Limits shown are examples, not recommendations. State minimum requirements differ.
Switching without a gap
If a new quote is lower, switch carefully so you are never uninsured:
- Confirm the final price after the insurer verifies your information.
- Set the new policy to start on or before the date the old one ends.
- Give the new insurer your lender or lessor information if the vehicle is financed.
- Save your new ID cards and declarations page.
- Cancel the old policy effective the same day, and ask about any refund of unused premium.
- If you have an SR-22, confirm the new insurer files it before the old filing ends.
How digital insurers set prices
Most insurers price a policy using your driving record, years licensed, age where allowed, the vehicle, where it is garaged, annual mileage, coverage limits, deductibles, prior insurance history, and, where state law permits, a credit-based insurance score. Each insurer weighs these factors differently, which is why quotes for the same driver can differ by hundreds of dollars. Improving the factors you control, especially your record and continuous coverage, pays off over several renewals. Many digital insurers also use phone-based driving data.
Payment plans and fees
How you pay can change your total cost. Many insurers charge installment fees for monthly payments, and some offer discounts for paying the full term upfront, enrolling in automatic payments, or going paperless. If paying in full is not possible, ask which payment plan has the lowest fees. Missing a payment can cancel your policy and create a lapse, which raises future rates, so set up reminders or autopay.
Account security
Because digital policies are managed online, protect your account. Use a strong, unique password, turn on two-factor authentication, and be wary of emails or texts asking you to log in through a link. Contact the insurer directly if a message looks suspicious, and review your policy documents after every change.
Making a claim digitally
In-app claims usually ask for photos of damage, a description, and the other party's information. For simple glass or minor damage claims, some insurers offer quick estimates and payments. For injury claims, multi-vehicle accidents, or disputed fault, expect a human adjuster to take over. Keep copies of all photos and messages.
Accessibility and language support
A good digital insurer works for everyone in your household. Check whether the app supports screen readers, offers Spanish or other languages, and provides alternatives such as phone support for drivers who are less comfortable with apps.
Using a digital insurer with an agent
Some digital insurers sell through independent agents as well as directly. That hybrid approach gives you app-based service with an advisor who can compare options and help with complex questions. Ask whether a company you like can be purchased through an agent.
Digital vs. traditional buying
Buying online is fast and convenient, and many established insurers now offer digital experiences as good as any startup. Traditional agent-based buying offers advice and advocacy. Many people get the best of both by gathering digital quotes, then asking an agent to compare them with options the agent can offer. Price is only one part of value; claims service and coverage quality matter more after a loss.
Reading app ratings and reviews wisely
App store ratings reflect the buying and app experience more than claims outcomes. For a fuller picture, combine app ratings with complaint data from state regulators and the NAIC, financial strength ratings, and claims satisfaction studies. A beautiful app does not guarantee a smooth injury claim.
What to have ready
These details help compare digital and agent quotes.
- Driver details. License numbers and dates of birth.
- Vehicle VINs. And annual mileage.
- Current declarations page. To match limits.
- Phone and app access. For telematics programs.
- State. Confirm availability.
