Auto Insurance in San Jose, CA: Coverage for Tech Commuters, Electric Vehicles, and Higher Limits
San Jose is the largest city in Silicon Valley, where commuters crowd US-101, I-280, I-880, and SR-87 and electric vehicles are far more common than in most of the country. Higher vehicle values and household assets make coverage limits a key decision.
This guide covers the coverage questions San Jose drivers ask most, the California rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.
Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves San Jose drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in San Jose, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in San Jose: what shapes your rate
Silicon Valley drivers often have more to protect than average.
Commuting
US-101, I-280, I-880, and SR-87 are among the busiest roads in the Bay Area. Liability limits well above 30/60/15 and matching UM/UIM help protect you in freeway crashes.
Electric vehicles
EV repairs, sensors, and battery damage can be expensive. Review collision and comprehensive deductibles, and ask whether your rental reimbursement covers a comparable vehicle.
Hybrid and remote work
If you commute only a few days a week, lower annual mileage counts as a major rating factor under Proposition 103.
Assets to protect
Many San Jose households have significant home equity and savings. Higher liability limits and an umbrella policy can protect those assets.
Coverage priorities for San Jose drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Electric or newer vehicle | Collision and comprehensive with an affordable deductible | Repairs on EVs and newer cars cost more. |
| Hybrid or remote worker | Accurate annual mileage | Miles driven is a major California rating factor. |
| Home and savings to protect | Higher liability and an umbrella | Assets are exposed in a serious at-fault crash. |
| Car parked on the street | Comprehensive | Theft and break-ins are comprehensive claims. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
California rules every San Jose driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $30,000 | Injuries you cause to one other person |
| Bodily injury, per accident | $60,000 | Injuries you cause to two or more people |
| Property damage | $15,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
- Higher minimums. California raised its minimum limits from 15/30/5 to 30/60/15 on January 1, 2025, and a further increase to 50/100/25 is scheduled for 2035. Even the new minimums can be used up quickly in a serious crash.
- Proposition 103. California insurers must weigh your driving safety record most heavily, followed by annual miles driven and years of driving experience. Other factors, such as where the car is garaged, can only be used as approved secondary factors, and insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate.
- Good Driver Discount. Drivers who meet California's good driver standards are entitled to a rate at least 20% lower than they would otherwise pay. A clean record is the biggest single lever on a California premium.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is part of your policy unless you waive it in writing. It protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Fault rules. California uses pure comparative negligence, so you can recover damages even if you share the blame, reduced by your percentage of fault.
- Low-cost program and SR-22. Income-eligible drivers may qualify for the California Low Cost Auto Insurance Program. If the DMV requires an SR-22, your insurer files it, commonly for three years. See SR-22 insurance in California.
How to compare San Jose quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| Medical payments | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

San Jose auto insurance FAQs
Does working from home lower my rate in San Jose?
Often, yes. Under Proposition 103, annual miles driven is the second most important rating factor, so report your actual mileage.
Is EV insurance more expensive?
It can be, because repairs and parts cost more. Rates vary widely by insurer and model, so comparing quotes matters.
Do I need an umbrella policy?
If your net worth exceeds your auto liability limits, an umbrella adds liability protection, usually starting at $1 million.
Should I carry medical payments coverage?
Medical payments coverage pays medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault. It is optional in California and usually inexpensive, so ask for a quote.
Is California a no-fault state?
No. California is an at-fault state with pure comparative negligence, so the driver who causes a crash is responsible, and your own recovery is reduced by any share of fault you carry.
Do I need full coverage in San Jose?
California only requires liability coverage of at least 30/60/15. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them on a financed or leased vehicle.
Does my credit score affect my car insurance in California?
No. Under Proposition 103, California insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate. Your driving record, annual mileage, and years of driving experience matter most.
