Illustration of a car on a road leading to a city skyline with the text Auto Insurance Oakland, California

Oakland drivers commute on I-880, I-580, and the Bay Bridge, share roads with port trucks, and often park on the street. Vehicle theft and break-ins are a real concern, and the Oakland Hills face wildfire risk.

This guide covers the coverage questions Oakland drivers ask most, the California rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Oakland drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Oakland, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Oakland: what shapes your rate

Parking, traffic, and fire risk shape Oakland coverage.

Theft and break-ins

Vehicle theft and break-in damage are covered under comprehensive. Belongings stolen from the car are usually covered by renters or homeowners insurance.

Commuting

I-880, I-580, and the Bay Bridge are major bottlenecks, and port trucks add to I-880 traffic. Liability limits above 30/60/15 and matching UM/UIM help protect you.

Wildfire in the hills

Fire damage to a car is covered under comprehensive. If you live in the hills, keep comprehensive on every vehicle.

Low-mileage drivers

Many residents use BART and drive less. Annual mileage is a major rating factor in California.

California rules every Oakland driver should know

California minimum liability limits (policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025)
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$30,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$60,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$15,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
  • Higher minimums. California raised its minimum limits from 15/30/5 to 30/60/15 on January 1, 2025, and a further increase to 50/100/25 is scheduled for 2035. Even the new minimums can be used up quickly in a serious crash.
  • Proposition 103. California insurers must weigh your driving safety record most heavily, followed by annual miles driven and years of driving experience. Other factors, such as where the car is garaged, can only be used as approved secondary factors, and insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate.
  • Good Driver Discount. Drivers who meet California's good driver standards are entitled to a rate at least 20% lower than they would otherwise pay. A clean record is the biggest single lever on a California premium.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is part of your policy unless you waive it in writing. It protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. California uses pure comparative negligence, so you can recover damages even if you share the blame, reduced by your percentage of fault.
  • Low-cost program and SR-22. Income-eligible drivers may qualify for the California Low Cost Auto Insurance Program. If the DMV requires an SR-22, your insurer files it, commonly for three years. See SR-22 insurance in California.

Oakland auto insurance FAQs

Is car theft covered in Oakland?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible. Liability-only policies do not cover theft of your own car.

Does riding BART lower my car insurance?

It can. Annual miles driven is the second most important rating factor under Proposition 103, so report your actual mileage.

How can I lower my Oakland premium?

Under Proposition 103, drivers who meet California's good driver standards get a rate at least 20% lower. Keeping your record clean is the most effective way to lower your premium.

Is my car covered in a wildfire?

Fire damage is covered under comprehensive. Insurers may pause new coverage when a fire is active nearby, so set coverage early.

Is California a no-fault state?

No. California is an at-fault state with pure comparative negligence, so the driver who causes a crash is responsible, and your own recovery is reduced by any share of fault you carry.

Do I need full coverage in Oakland?

California only requires liability coverage of at least 30/60/15. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them on a financed or leased vehicle.

Does my credit score affect my car insurance in California?

No. Under Proposition 103, California insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate. Your driving record, annual mileage, and years of driving experience matter most.
