Auto Insurance in Lansing, MI: Coverage for Commuters, Michigan State Students, and Winter Roads
Lansing is Michigan's capital, next door to Michigan State University in East Lansing. State workers, students, and commuters on I-96, I-496, and US-127, along with winter weather and deer, shape what Lansing drivers need.
This guide covers the coverage questions Lansing drivers ask most, the Michigan rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.
Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Lansing drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Lansing, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Lansing: what shapes your rate
Commuting and campus life shape Lansing driving.
Students and young drivers
Good student and distant student discounts can lower premiums. A student away at school without a car may qualify for a lower rate.
Winter and lake-effect snow
Snow, ice, and whiteouts cause slide-offs and chain-reaction crashes. Collision covers your car, and roadside assistance helps when you are stuck.
Deer on the road
Michigan has tens of thousands of deer crashes a year, peaking in fall. Hitting a deer is a comprehensive claim, not collision.
Choosing your PIP level
Lower PIP medical levels save money but depend on your health coverage. Check how your health plan treats auto injuries before you choose.
Coverage priorities for Lansing drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| College student | Good student or distant student discount | Can lower premiums. |
| Daily commuter | 250/500 liability or higher | Excess medical claims can follow you. |
| Winter driving | Collision and roadside assistance | Slide-offs are common. |
| Suburban or rural roads | Comprehensive | Deer strikes are comprehensive claims. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
Michigan rules every Lansing driver should know
| Coverage | Requirement | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | Default $250,000 / $500,000; lowest option $50,000 / $100,000 | Injuries you cause, when the injured person can sue |
| Property damage liability | $10,000 | Damage you cause to property in other states |
| Property protection insurance (PPI) | $1 million | Damage your car causes in Michigan to buildings, fences, and properly parked vehicles |
| Personal injury protection (PIP) | Your choice of medical level, plus wage loss and replacement services | Your own and your household's injury costs, regardless of fault |
- PIP medical choices. Since the 2019 reform, you choose your PIP medical level: unlimited, $500,000, or $250,000. A $250,000 option with exclusions requires qualified health coverage, a $50,000 option requires Medicaid, and opting out of PIP medical requires Medicare Parts A and B. If you choose an option you do not qualify for, your policy defaults to the standard level.
- Liability limits. Bodily injury limits default to 250/500. You can choose lower limits, down to 50/100, only by signing the state selection form. Because you can now be sued for medical costs above the injured person's PIP level, many drivers keep 250/500 or higher.
- Collision is not covered by PPI. PPI does not pay for damage to moving vehicles. To repair your car after a crash, you need collision coverage. Michigan insurers offer limited, standard, and broad form collision, and they differ on whether you pay a deductible when you are not at fault.
- Mini-tort. If you are 50% or more at fault, the other driver can recover up to $3,000 from you for vehicle damage their insurance did not cover. Most policies offer mini-tort coverage to pay this for you.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is optional in Michigan, but it protects you when the at-fault driver has little or no bodily injury coverage. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Driving uninsured. Driving without insurance is a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500, up to one year in jail, and a possible license suspension. See high-risk auto insurance.
How to compare Lansing quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 250/500 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| PIP medical level | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

Lansing auto insurance FAQs
How can college students save on car insurance?
Ask about good student discounts for a B average or better and distant student discounts if the student leaves the car at home. Keeping the student on a parent's policy is usually cheaper than a separate policy.
What is mini-tort coverage?
If you are 50% or more at fault, the other driver can recover up to $3,000 from you for vehicle damage. Mini-tort coverage pays that for you and usually costs little.
Is uninsured motorist coverage required in Michigan?
No, it is optional. It pays for your pain and suffering when an uninsured or underinsured at-fault driver seriously injures you, so most drivers should consider it.
Is Michigan still a no-fault state?
Yes. Your own PIP pays your medical bills, wage loss, and replacement services first, regardless of fault. Since the 2019 reform, you choose how much PIP medical coverage to carry.
Which PIP medical level should I choose?
It depends on your health insurance. Unlimited gives the most protection. Lower levels cost less, but your health plan may not cover auto injuries the same way, and the lowest options require qualified health coverage, Medicaid, or Medicare.
Do I need collision coverage in Lansing?
PPI does not pay to repair your own car, or any moving vehicle, after a crash. If you want your car fixed, you need collision coverage, and a lender will require it.
