Auto Insurance in Washington State: Requirements, PIP and UIM Rules, and City Guides

Illustration of a car on a snowy road lined with evergreen trees with the text Auto Insurance Washington, statewide guide

Washington requires only 25/50/10 liability, but insurers must include PIP and underinsured motorist coverage unless you reject them in writing. From Seattle traffic and theft to snow in Spokane, those details shape the right policy.

This guide covers Washington's insurance rules, the coverage choices that matter most, and links to our local guides for ten Washington cities. Compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms with one call.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Washington drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Washington, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Washington: what shapes your rate

Local conditions vary across Washington, but these risks come up statewide.

Freeway congestion

Stop-and-go traffic on I-5 and I-405 leads to frequent rear-end crashes. Higher liability limits and UIM protect you in multi-car pileups.

Newer and luxury vehicles

Newer cars cost more to repair. Gap coverage and higher liability limits protect your investment and your savings.

Teen drivers

Adding a teen raises premiums. Good student and driver training discounts can help.

Vehicle theft and car prowls

Washington has had some of the highest vehicle theft rates in the country, and car prowls are common in cities. Comprehensive covers theft and break-in damage.

Rain and slick roads

Months of rain and the first slick days of fall raise the risk of rear-end crashes. Collision covers your car, and good tires help.

Washington rules every driver should know

Washington minimum liability limits
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$25,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$50,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$10,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
  • A low property damage minimum. Washington's $10,000 property damage minimum is one of the lowest in the country. Many vehicles cost far more to repair or replace, so a minimum policy can leave you paying the difference.
  • PIP and UIM are included unless you reject them. Insurers must offer personal injury protection and underinsured motorist coverage, and you must reject each in writing if you do not want it. PIP pays your medical bills regardless of fault, and UIM pays when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. Washington uses pure comparative fault. You can recover damages even if you share the blame, reduced by your percentage of fault.
  • Right to appraisal. Under a law signed in 2025, policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, give you a right to request an appraisal when you disagree with your insurer's repair estimate or vehicle valuation.
  • Driving uninsured. Driving without insurance is a traffic infraction with a fine of more than $500, and an uninsured at-fault crash can bring a license suspension and an SR-22 requirement. See high-risk auto insurance.

Washington auto insurance FAQs

How can I lower the cost of adding a teen driver?

Ask about good student and driver training discounts, and consider assigning the teen to the least expensive car. Some insurers also offer telematics discounts for safe driving.

What if I disagree with my insurer's repair estimate or total-loss value?

For policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, Washington law gives you a right to request an appraisal. Each side picks an appraiser, and an umpire settles any disagreement.

Do I need an umbrella policy?

If you own a home or have significant savings, an umbrella policy adds liability protection above your auto and home limits, often for a modest premium.

Does my policy cover a stolen car or a break-in?

Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. Theft of the car, and damage from a break-in, are comprehensive claims, subject to your deductible. Items stolen from the car are usually covered under renters or homeowners insurance.

Is Washington a no-fault state?

No. Washington is an at-fault state with pure comparative fault. PIP, if you keep it, pays your medical bills first regardless of fault, and you can recover from the at-fault driver reduced by your share of the blame.

Do I need full coverage in Washington?

Washington requires 25/50/10 liability. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

Should I keep PIP and underinsured motorist coverage?

For most drivers, yes. Both are included unless you reject them in writing. PIP pays medical bills quickly regardless of fault, and UIM protects you from drivers with little or no insurance.
