Auto Insurance in Seattle, WA: Coverage for Vehicle Theft, Freeway Traffic, and Rainy Roads
Seattle drivers deal with some of the worst traffic on the West Coast, steep hills, months of rain, and high rates of vehicle theft and car prowls. Washington's low property damage minimum and its PIP and UIM rules shape what Seattle drivers need.
This guide covers the coverage questions Seattle drivers ask most, the Washington rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Driving in Seattle: what shapes your rate
Density and weather shape most Seattle claims.
Vehicle theft and car prowls
Washington has had some of the highest vehicle theft rates in the country, and car prowls are common in cities. Comprehensive covers theft and break-in damage.
Freeway congestion
Stop-and-go traffic on I-5 and I-405 leads to frequent rear-end crashes. Higher liability limits and UIM protect you in multi-car pileups.
Rain and slick roads
Months of rain and the first slick days of fall raise the risk of rear-end crashes. Collision covers your car, and good tires help.
Property damage limits
The $10,000 property damage minimum rarely covers a crash with a newer vehicle. Many drivers choose $50,000 or $100,000.
Coverage priorities for Seattle drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Car parked on the street | Comprehensive | Theft and car prowls. |
| Daily commuter | 100/300/100 liability and matching UIM | Crashes can exceed minimums. |
| Any driver | Keep PIP and UIM | Both are easy to reject by mistake. |
| Tight street parking | Collision with a manageable deductible | Sideswipes and dings. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
Washington rules every Seattle driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $25,000 | Injuries you cause to one other person |
| Bodily injury, per accident | $50,000 | Injuries you cause to two or more people |
| Property damage | $10,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
- A low property damage minimum. Washington's $10,000 property damage minimum is one of the lowest in the country. Many vehicles cost far more to repair or replace, so a minimum policy can leave you paying the difference.
- PIP and UIM are included unless you reject them. Insurers must offer personal injury protection and underinsured motorist coverage, and you must reject each in writing if you do not want it. PIP pays your medical bills regardless of fault, and UIM pays when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Fault rules. Washington uses pure comparative fault. You can recover damages even if you share the blame, reduced by your percentage of fault.
- Right to appraisal. Under a law signed in 2025, policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, give you a right to request an appraisal when you disagree with your insurer's repair estimate or vehicle valuation.
- Driving uninsured. Driving without insurance is a traffic infraction with a fine of more than $500, and an uninsured at-fault crash can bring a license suspension and an SR-22 requirement. See high-risk auto insurance.
How to compare Seattle quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| PIP | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

Seattle auto insurance FAQs
Does my policy cover a stolen car or a break-in?
Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. Theft of the car, and damage from a break-in, are comprehensive claims, subject to your deductible. Items stolen from the car are usually covered under renters or homeowners insurance.
What if I disagree with my insurer's repair estimate or total-loss value?
For policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, Washington law gives you a right to request an appraisal. Each side picks an appraiser, and an umpire settles any disagreement.
Is $10,000 of property damage coverage enough?
Rarely. Many cars cost far more than $10,000 to repair or replace. Higher property damage limits usually cost little extra.
Is Washington a no-fault state?
No. Washington is an at-fault state with pure comparative fault. PIP, if you keep it, pays your medical bills first regardless of fault, and you can recover from the at-fault driver reduced by your share of the blame.
Do I need full coverage in Seattle?
Washington requires 25/50/10 liability. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.
Should I keep PIP and underinsured motorist coverage?
For most drivers, yes. Both are included unless you reject them in writing. PIP pays medical bills quickly regardless of fault, and UIM protects you from drivers with little or no insurance.
