Driving in Sterling Heights: what shapes your rate
Suburban households shape Sterling Heights coverage.
Teen drivers
Adding a teen raises premiums. Good student and driver training discounts can help.
Choosing your PIP level
Lower PIP medical levels save money but depend on your health coverage. Check how your health plan treats auto injuries before you choose.
Winter and lake-effect snow
Snow, ice, and whiteouts cause slide-offs and chain-reaction crashes. Collision covers your car, and roadside assistance helps when you are stuck.
Choosing a collision type
Broad form collision usually waives your deductible when you are not mainly at fault. Limited collision costs less but only pays when you are not mainly at fault. Standard pays regardless, minus your deductible.
Coverage priorities for Sterling Heights drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Household with a teen | Good student and driver training discounts | Can offset the added cost. |
| Has qualifying health coverage | Compare PIP medical levels | Lower levels can cut premiums. |
| Daily commuter | 250/500 liability or higher | Excess medical claims can follow you. |
| Homeowner | Home and auto bundle | Often the largest discount. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
Michigan rules every Sterling Heights driver should know
| Coverage | Requirement | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | Default $250,000 / $500,000; lowest option $50,000 / $100,000 | Injuries you cause, when the injured person can sue |
| Property damage liability | $10,000 | Damage you cause to property in other states |
| Property protection insurance (PPI) | $1 million | Damage your car causes in Michigan to buildings, fences, and properly parked vehicles |
| Personal injury protection (PIP) | Your choice of medical level, plus wage loss and replacement services | Your own and your household's injury costs, regardless of fault |
- PIP medical choices. Since the 2019 reform, you choose your PIP medical level: unlimited, $500,000, or $250,000. A $250,000 option with exclusions requires qualified health coverage, a $50,000 option requires Medicaid, and opting out of PIP medical requires Medicare Parts A and B. If you choose an option you do not qualify for, your policy defaults to the standard level.
- Liability limits. Bodily injury limits default to 250/500. You can choose lower limits, down to 50/100, only by signing the state selection form. Because you can now be sued for medical costs above the injured person's PIP level, many drivers keep 250/500 or higher.
- Collision is not covered by PPI. PPI does not pay for damage to moving vehicles. To repair your car after a crash, you need collision coverage. Michigan insurers offer limited, standard, and broad form collision, and they differ on whether you pay a deductible when you are not at fault.
- Mini-tort. If you are 50% or more at fault, the other driver can recover up to $3,000 from you for vehicle damage their insurance did not cover. Most policies offer mini-tort coverage to pay this for you.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is optional in Michigan, but it protects you when the at-fault driver has little or no bodily injury coverage. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Driving uninsured. Driving without insurance is a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500, up to one year in jail, and a possible license suspension. See high-risk auto insurance.

| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| PIP medical level | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

Sterling Heights auto insurance FAQs
What is mini-tort coverage?
If you are 50% or more at fault, the other driver can recover up to $3,000 from you for vehicle damage. Mini-tort coverage pays that for you and usually costs little.
Is uninsured motorist coverage required in Michigan?
No, it is optional. It pays for your pain and suffering when an uninsured or underinsured at-fault driver seriously injures you, so most drivers should consider it.
How can I lower the cost of adding a teen driver?
Ask about good student and driver training discounts, and consider assigning the teen to the least expensive car. Some insurers also offer telematics discounts for safe driving.
Is Michigan still a no-fault state?
Yes. Your own PIP pays your medical bills, wage loss, and replacement services first, regardless of fault. Since the 2019 reform, you choose how much PIP medical coverage to carry.
Which PIP medical level should I choose?
It depends on your health insurance. Unlimited gives the most protection. Lower levels cost less, but your health plan may not cover auto injuries the same way, and the lowest options require qualified health coverage, Medicaid, or Medicare.
Do I need collision coverage in Sterling Heights?
PPI does not pay to repair your own car, or any moving vehicle, after a crash. If you want your car fixed, you need collision coverage, and a lender will require it.
