Auto Insurance in Detroit, MI: Coverage for PIP Choices, Vehicle Theft, and Freeway Commutes

Illustration of a car on a road leading to a city skyline with the text Auto Insurance Detroit, Michigan

Detroit drivers have long paid some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country. Since Michigan's 2019 reform, choosing the right PIP medical level, liability limits, and collision type matters more than ever, along with protection against theft, potholes, and heavy freeway traffic.

This guide covers the coverage questions Detroit drivers ask most, the Michigan rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Detroit drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Detroit, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Detroit: what shapes your rate

Coverage choices matter more in Detroit than almost anywhere.

Choosing your PIP level

Lower PIP medical levels save money but depend on your health coverage. Check how your health plan treats auto injuries before you choose.

Vehicle theft

Theft and break-ins are comprehensive claims. Comprehensive and anti-theft devices help, and some insurers give credits for them.

Freeway commutes

I-75, I-94, I-96, and the Lodge carry heavy traffic. Higher liability limits protect you now that injured people can sue for medical costs above their PIP level.

Potholes

Michigan freeze-thaw cycles create deep potholes. Pothole damage to your car is usually a collision claim, so your collision deductible applies.

Michigan rules every Detroit driver should know

Michigan required auto insurance
CoverageRequirementWhat it pays for
Bodily injury liabilityDefault $250,000 / $500,000; lowest option $50,000 / $100,000Injuries you cause, when the injured person can sue
Property damage liability$10,000Damage you cause to property in other states
Property protection insurance (PPI)$1 millionDamage your car causes in Michigan to buildings, fences, and properly parked vehicles
Personal injury protection (PIP)Your choice of medical level, plus wage loss and replacement servicesYour own and your household's injury costs, regardless of fault
  • PIP medical choices. Since the 2019 reform, you choose your PIP medical level: unlimited, $500,000, or $250,000. A $250,000 option with exclusions requires qualified health coverage, a $50,000 option requires Medicaid, and opting out of PIP medical requires Medicare Parts A and B. If you choose an option you do not qualify for, your policy defaults to the standard level.
  • Liability limits. Bodily injury limits default to 250/500. You can choose lower limits, down to 50/100, only by signing the state selection form. Because you can now be sued for medical costs above the injured person's PIP level, many drivers keep 250/500 or higher.
  • Collision is not covered by PPI. PPI does not pay for damage to moving vehicles. To repair your car after a crash, you need collision coverage. Michigan insurers offer limited, standard, and broad form collision, and they differ on whether you pay a deductible when you are not at fault.
  • Mini-tort. If you are 50% or more at fault, the other driver can recover up to $3,000 from you for vehicle damage their insurance did not cover. Most policies offer mini-tort coverage to pay this for you.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is optional in Michigan, but it protects you when the at-fault driver has little or no bodily injury coverage. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Driving uninsured. Driving without insurance is a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500, up to one year in jail, and a possible license suspension. See high-risk auto insurance.

Detroit auto insurance FAQs

Does my policy cover me in Canada?

Yes. U.S. auto policies cover you in Canada. Carry your proof of insurance, and ask your insurer for a Canadian proof-of-insurance card if you cross often.

What is mini-tort coverage?

If you are 50% or more at fault, the other driver can recover up to $3,000 from you for vehicle damage. Mini-tort coverage pays that for you and usually costs little.

Is uninsured motorist coverage required in Michigan?

No, it is optional. It pays for your pain and suffering when an uninsured or underinsured at-fault driver seriously injures you, so most drivers should consider it.

Is Michigan still a no-fault state?

Yes. Your own PIP pays your medical bills, wage loss, and replacement services first, regardless of fault. Since the 2019 reform, you choose how much PIP medical coverage to carry.

Which PIP medical level should I choose?

It depends on your health insurance. Unlimited gives the most protection. Lower levels cost less, but your health plan may not cover auto injuries the same way, and the lowest options require qualified health coverage, Medicaid, or Medicare.

Do I need collision coverage in Detroit?

PPI does not pay to repair your own car, or any moving vehicle, after a crash. If you want your car fixed, you need collision coverage, and a lender will require it.
