Illustration of a car on an open road across the plains with the text Auto Insurance Augusta, Georgia

Augusta is home to Fort Gordon and to one of golf's most famous tournaments, which brings huge crowds each April. Many residents commute across the Savannah River to and from South Carolina on I-20.

This guide covers the coverage questions Augusta drivers ask most, the Georgia rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Augusta drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Augusta, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Augusta: what shapes your rate

Military life and a big April tournament shape Augusta driving.

Military households

Service members who move or deploy often benefit from military discounts. If you deploy, Georgia lets active-duty members cancel registration with a form signed by their commanding officer, avoiding lapse fees.

Tournament week

Each April, visitors pack Washington Road and the roads around the course. Parking-lot damage and fender benders are common.

South Carolina commutes

Your Georgia policy covers you in South Carolina. If you move across the river, you will need a South Carolina policy once you register there.

Deer

Deer collisions are common on Georgia roads, especially in the fall and at dawn and dusk. They are covered under comprehensive, not collision.

Georgia rules every Augusta driver should know

Georgia minimum liability limits
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$25,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$50,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$25,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
  • Uninsured motorist coverage. Georgia insurers must include uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits unless you reject it in writing. You can choose "add-on" coverage, which pays in addition to the at-fault driver's insurance, or "reduced" coverage, which is offset by it. Add-on costs a little more but protects you better. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. Georgia uses modified comparative negligence. You can recover damages only if you are less than 50% at fault, and your recovery is reduced by your share.
  • 2025 tort reform. For crashes on or after April 21, 2025, evidence that you were not wearing a seat belt can now be used in an injury case, and juries can see what medical providers were actually paid. Buckling up protects your claim as well as your health.
  • Insurance lapses. Insurers report coverage to the state electronically. A lapse of 10 or more days brings a $25 lapse fee, a reinstatement fee, and registration suspension if not resolved. Cancel your registration before canceling insurance on a car you no longer drive.
  • SR-22 and SR-22A. Serious violations can require an SR-22, and repeat uninsured driving can require an SR-22A, generally for three years. See high-risk auto insurance.
  • State minimums are a floor. One serious injury or a crash with a newer vehicle can exceed 25/50/25, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.

Augusta auto insurance FAQs

What should I do with my car insurance if I deploy?

Georgia charges lapse fees if insurance ends while a vehicle is registered. Deployed active-duty members can cancel registration using Form MV-18G with a commanding officer's signature before canceling insurance.

Should I keep uninsured motorist coverage?

Yes, for most drivers. It pays for your injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little, and it stays on your policy unless you reject it in writing. Choose add-on coverage for the most protection.

Does my Georgia policy cover me in South Carolina?

Yes. U.S. auto policies cover you in other states and adjust to meet the other state's minimum requirements.

Does not wearing a seat belt affect my claim in Georgia?

For crashes on or after April 21, 2025, the other side may use seat belt non-use as evidence in an injury case. Wearing your seat belt protects both your health and your claim.

Is Georgia a no-fault state?

No. Georgia is an at-fault state. You can recover from the other driver only if you are less than 50% at fault, and your recovery is reduced by your share.

Do I need full coverage in Augusta?

Georgia only requires liability coverage of at least 25/50/25. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

Should I choose add-on or reduced uninsured motorist coverage?

Add-on coverage pays in addition to the at-fault driver's insurance, while reduced coverage is offset by it. Add-on usually costs a little more but can make a big difference after a serious crash.
